Match Preview
North Queensland welcome the Dolphins to Townsville on Saturday evening in the first of two all-Queensland clashes for the day, with both sides sitting on 16 points and the potential to finish the weekend either inside the top four or outside the eight.
North Queensland are currently ninth, outside the top eight on points differential, with their +13 trailing the seventh-placed Dolphins’ +51. The Cowboys’ form has been patchy, with strong wins over the Roosters and Rabbitohs mixed with losses to lower-placed opposition in Parramatta and Canberra.
The Dolphins, on the other hand, have steadily built momentum, entering Saturday’s clash on the back of a club-record fourth straight win after narrow losses to the current top two sides. It could be argued that the Dolphins are yet to produce a full 80-minute performance at their best, and what better place to do it than Townsville, where they remain unbeaten in three visits.
Team news is positive for both sides, with the Cowboys welcoming back Reuben Cotter from Origin rest, while hooker Soni Luke returns from injury. The Dolphins benefited from a post-Origin bye last weekend, giving their Maroons a full week to recover. The extra time has also allowed Herbie Farnworth and Kodi Nikorima to return from hamstring injuries, with both named in an almost full-strength backline. However, how they will fit in the currently injured Jake Averillo remains a question moving forward.
If both teams can hit their peak, this shapes as an attacking showcase featuring two exciting backlines. Historically, points flow freely in this fixture, with an average of 57 points per game across six meetings, including three matches with 60+ points.
The marquee matchup starts at fullback, with Scott Drinkwater up against Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow — a former Cowboy whose move north to the Dolphins has paid off for both player and club. Drinkwater leads the NRL in line-break assists in 2026, with 32 combined line-break and try assists — a better return than Nathan Cleary. He has lifted his game further after securing his long-term future, where he will join the Dragons.
Tabuai-Fidow may not yet be at his absolute peak this season, but he remains a constant attacking threat and looks due for a standout performance.
The centres will also be pivotal, with Farnworth arguably among the best in the NRL right now, leading the competition in tackle breaks. Jack Bostock has also impressed since returning from injury. Meanwhile, the Cowboys boast Jaxon Purdue — recently re-signed long-term — and Tom Chester, who sits among the top players for line breaks in 2026.
Despite their attacking talent, the Dolphins’ defence has been an underrated strength this season. They rank fourth for points conceded per game and also have the fourth-lowest missed tackle average — an area where they hold a clear advantage over North Queensland, who sit second worst in missed tackles per game.
Kulikefu Finefeuiaki is one player to watch, as he pushes for Origin selection following the injury to Pat Carrigan. The Dolphins back-rower has become a consistent 80-minute performer and continues to build an impressive season.
Several key statistical trends favour the visitors. The Dolphins are unbeaten in Townsville (3/3) and have won all six away games against Queensland teams outside of Brisbane. The away side has won five of the six meetings between these sides, further strengthening the Dolphins’ case.
However, Saturdays have been tricky for both teams. North Queensland have won just one of their past six Saturday home games against Queensland opposition, while the Dolphins have lost five of their past six Saturday fixtures, with an overall win rate of 37%.

Bold call: The Dolphins to go on a second half spree of 30+ points, including a rare and unwanted (by him) Ray Stone try.
