Match Preview

With both teams sitting just one win outside the top four, this shapes as a huge clash, with a win vital to ensure they don’t lose touch and potentially slip outside the top eight.

There are multiple changes for both sides, as Haumole Olakau’atu returns for the Sea Eagles after being rested last week, with Tolutau Koula also returning after being cleared following his head knock in Origin One. Ethan Bullemor is the one to make way, with Josh Feledy and Jackson Shereb both dropping back to the bench.

For the Rabbitohs, David Fifita will play his first game since Round 6 after overcoming a hamstring injury, while Brandon Smith has also been named to return. Campbell Graham will once again line up in the centres, with Tallis Duncan shifting to the back row and Euan Aitken moving back to the bench. Keaon Koloamatangi also returns in the front row in a big boost, while Jye Gray has been named to start at fullback, with Matt Dufty on the bench.

The Sea Eagles’ momentum was halted slightly last week as they suffered a 28–22 loss to the Sharks, while the Rabbitohs have lost three of their last four matches after a hot start to the year, though they should come into this clash feeling fresh after their Round 13 bye.

Neither team will be at full strength, with Tom Trbojevic and Latrell Mitchell still sidelined, but both forward packs receive big boosts with the returns of Olakau’atu for Manly, and Koloamatangi and Fifita for South Sydney. Field position will be key, and Manly will once again rely on Taniela Paseka to lead from the front. The experienced prop has been in strong form this year, averaging 138 metres per game, and was at his best last week, running for 164 metres in just 49 minutes.

On the other side, Koloamatangi has been unlucky to miss Origin selection after a red-hot start to the season, averaging 163 metres per game. If he can win the battle through the middle, Fifita and Duncan on the edges should be able to capitalise.

Despite the loss last week, the halves pairing of Jamal Fogarty and Luke Brooks were heavily involved, with two try assists each, while Brooks’ running game will also be key after 10 runs for 114 metres against the Sharks.

After a slow start at home, the Sea Eagles have won their last three games at 4 Pines Park, and that advantage could prove crucial. However, the Rabbitohs hold the edge in recent meetings, having won eight of the past 10 clashes between the two sides.
