The PNG Chiefs have announced their third official signing, with experienced utility Connor Watson committing to the new franchise on a two-year deal for the 2028 and 2029 seasons.
Player Background
Connor Watson, who will turn 31 by the time he joins the Chiefs in 2028, has built a reputation as one of the NRL’s most reliable and versatile players. The utility has played 150+ NRL games across stints with the Newcastle Knights and Sydney Roosters. He has represented New South Wales on five occasions in State of Origin.
Current Situation
Watson has been granted an early release from his Sydney Roosters contract. He will spend the 2027 season with the St George-Illawarra Dragons on a one-year deal before linking with the Chiefs in 2028.
Why It Matters for the PNG Chiefs
Watson becomes Signing #003 for the expansion club, joining Jarome Luai and Alex Johnston in committing to the project. Known for his toughness, professionalism and versatility across hooker, lock and the halves, he adds valuable experience and leadership to the Chiefs’ inaugural roster.
Watson and his partner Kiana recently toured PNG and its facilities, with both falling in love with the country and the club’s vision.
PNG Chiefs General Manager Football Michael Chammas said: “Connor has made it clear from the outset that he wanted to be part of the PNG Chiefs and this incredible journey we are building. His versatility and experience will be invaluable for us.”
CEO Lorna McPherson added: “He leads with kindness… We wanted people who would genuinely feel at home in Papua New Guinea, and people Papua New Guinea would feel proud to welcome.”
