Match Preview
Sunday afternoon footy heads to CommBank Stadium in Round 14, as the high-flying Panthers take on the resurgent Tigers. The Panthers sit first on the ladder, while the Tigers have slipped to 10th but remain level with several sides fighting for a top-eight spot.
The Panthers will be brimming with confidence after outlasting a valiant Warriors outfit 20–18 in a top-of-the-table clash last week. They secured the win without three of their Origin stars — Nathan Cleary, Isaah Yeo, and Brian To’o. The Tigers, meanwhile, bounced back into the winner’s circle after their Round 12 bye with a resilient 22–16 victory over the Bulldogs.
For the Tigers, Alex Twal and Sione Fainu are out with a knee injury and concussion respectively. Mavrik Geyer starts in the second row, with Charlie Murray named at lock in just his sixth NRL appearance. Heamasi Makasini is named despite picking up a shoulder injury last week, though look for Starford To’a to be a late replacement if he is unable to play. Ethan Roberts and Bunty Afoa join the extended bench.
For the Panthers, the Origin contingent of Cleary, Yeo, and To’o all return after being rested. Paul Alamoti shifts to centre, with Jack Cogger, Izack Tago, and Liam Henry reverting to the bench.
The key for the Tigers will be deception around the ruck and generating second-phase play against a tough Panthers defence. Api Koroisau’s return last week was pivotal in their improved attack, with his craft and control from dummy-half setting the platform, particularly inside the opposition 20-metre zone. If the Panthers are allowed to set their defensive line quickly, scoring opportunities will be limited.
For the Panthers, the focus will be exploiting an inexperienced Tigers forward pack and applying pressure on the edges. The Tigers will miss Twal through the middle, giving Penrith an advantage in the forward battle. With Cleary returning fresh from Origin, expect the Panthers to create plenty of attacking opportunities, especially down the right edge.
The Tigers are riding a three-game winning streak at CommBank Stadium. Casey McLean has scored seven tries in his past seven matches.
