Match Preview

With both teams locked on the same competition points and pushing hard for a top-four finish, this clash shapes as one of the most significant games of the round. The Sharks are surging into premiership contention, while the Knights continue their remarkable rise from 2025 wooden spooners to genuine finals hopefuls under Justin Holbrook.

Cronulla arrive with enormous momentum after rewriting the record books in their 66-0 demolition of the Dolphins. The victory became the club’s biggest ever NRL win, surpassing previous highs of 62 points against Manly in 2005 and Newcastle in 2016. Sitting eighth after Round 17, the Sharks have powered into the top four and now find themselves perfectly positioned to secure a coveted finals advantage. With upcoming matches against Manly, South Sydney and St George Illawarra, another win here would significantly strengthen their top-four credentials.

Newcastle, meanwhile, were far from their best in a scrappy loss to South Sydney. Errors and missed opportunities proved costly, although Kalyn Ponga nearly engineered a stunning comeback. The Knights sit level with Cronulla on competition points and can reclaim a place in the top four with victory. However, a difficult run home featuring the Roosters, Broncos and Raiders means every point is crucial as they attempt to cement their finals ambitions.

The Sharks receive a timely boost with Briton Nikora returning from Origin duty. Sam Stonestreet has been named in the reserves but faces a tough task forcing his way past established wingers Sione Katoa and Ronaldo Mulitalo. Cronulla remain without Jesse Colquhoun and Toby Rudolf, although both are expected to return next week.

For Newcastle, Bradman Best returns after Origin commitments and adds further strike power out wide. Tyson Gamble has been named in the extended squad, while Brodie Jones could make his first appearance of the season. The major absentee remains Jacob Saifiti, who is still several weeks away from returning from a hamstring injury.

Cronulla produced the complete performance against the Dolphins, combining ruthless attacking execution with the defensive steel that has become a hallmark of their recent success. Nicho Hynes’ 30-point masterclass should provide a significant confidence boost, while Braydon Trindall continues to enjoy the best playmaking season of his career, adding three try assists last week to take his career tally to 21.

The Sharks’ defensive improvement may be even more important. They have conceded 12 points or fewer in four of their past five matches, creating a platform that allows their attacking stars to flourish. Newcastle’s ability to break down that defensive line could ultimately determine the outcome.

For the Knights, ball security is non-negotiable. Errors and missed opportunities undermined their performance against South Sydney and cannot be repeated against a Cronulla side currently punishing opposition mistakes. Kalyn Ponga and Dylan Brown remain the club’s most dangerous attacking weapons and will need to consistently challenge the Sharks through the middle and on the edges.

Several individual match-ups could shape the contest. Ponga versus Will Kennedy is a battle between two elite support players and ball-runners. Bradman Best and Jesse Ramien will provide plenty of aggression and power on the edge, while Addin Fonua-Blake’s showdown with Tyson Frizell promises to be a heavyweight clash through the middle. The duel between Briton Nikora and Dylan Lucas is another critical edge battle.

However, the X-factor may be Blayke Brailey. If Cronulla gain momentum through the ruck, his speed and service from dummy-half could expose tired defenders and create the opportunities that decide a high-quality contest.

The rivalry has been remarkably even over the years, with Newcastle holding a narrow 33-30-1 advantage overall.

At Ocean Protect Stadium, however, Cronulla have enjoyed the upper hand, winning 18 of the 29 meetings between the clubs. The Knights are chasing their first victory at the venue since July 13, 2014, when they defeated the Sharks 31-18, ending a drought that now stretches more than a decade.

Cronulla’s confidence is sky-high, their defence has tightened considerably and their spine is firing. Newcastle have the individual brilliance to challenge anyone, but unless they significantly reduce their error rate, the Sharks appear better equipped to handle the pressure moments.
