Match Preview
Round 20 kicks off on Thursday night at CommBank Stadium, with the Panthers hosting the Broncos in a second rematch of last year’s nail-biting preliminary final. Both teams are well-rested coming off their final byes of the year last week.
The Panthers are looking to solidify their position on top of the ladder, while the Broncos are in 14th and trying desperately to halt their eight-game losing streak.
For the Panthers, they welcome back their Origin contingent of Nathan Cleary, Isaah Yeo, and Liam Martin. Casey McLean and Isaiah Papali’i also return from injury at centre and second row respectively. Jack Cole, Scott Sorensen, Billy Phillips, and Liam Henry all revert to the six-man bench.
For the Broncos, they have several big inclusions themselves, with Origin stars Payne Haas, Reece Walsh, and Pat Carrigan all returning. In addition, they welcome back Adam Reynolds, Ezra Mam, and Brendan Piakura from injury. Billy Walters is also a chance to join the six-man bench after being named in the reserves.
The key for the Panthers is keeping their game plan simple against a Broncos side that is struggling with confidence. Make the Broncos work hard for all their metres and keep them pinned in their own end. That will negate the danger of Walsh, who is the key attacking weapon for the Broncos if they’re going to cause an upset. On top of this, Nathan Cleary will once again be the key man for the Panthers. His confidence will be sky high after leading the Blues to an Origin series win last week with a man of the match performance. If his forwards can continue to lay a platform for him, expect more of the same from Cleary at club level.
The key for the Broncos is their forwards gaining the ascendancy in the middle of the field, both with and without the ball. A tough task against the Panthers forward pack, but it’s their best chance of getting Reynolds and Walsh the space they need to fire. Haas returning from an Origin-winning performance will bolster his confidence. He’ll lead from the front and be at his damaging best, but he’ll need help. Carrigan is back on deck and he’ll be just as crucial in the forward battle. Expect a desperate performance from the Broncos as they look to keep their slim finals hopes alive.
The Panthers have won all six games they’ve played at CommBank Stadium this season. The Broncos have only beaten the Panthers in Sydney once since 2009.
