Match Preview

With Origin now in the rearview mirror and eight rounds remaining until finals, things are starting to get tense for the Sydney Roosters and Melbourne Storm.

The Roosters are third on the ladder, trailing the Warriors on for and against, but still needing to win to maintain their position, while the Storm have climbed to 10th after winning six of their past eight.

The Roosters were below their best on Saturday night in a 28-12 win over Parramatta, but welcome back Sam Walker and Reece Robson after the pair were rested following Origin Game 3. Connor Watson slides back to the bench and Benaiah Ioelu drops out of the 19. Robert Toia is being rested, with Hugo Savala shuffling to right centre. Nat Butcher returns to the starting side after missing Round 19 due to suspension, with Salesi Foketi dropping to the bench. With James Tedesco still sidelined after a failed HIA in the Origin decider, Cody Ramsey retains the fullback role, while Spencer Leniu remains in the front row with Lindsay Collins also unavailable.

There’s a huge double blow for Melbourne, with Cameron Munster requiring surgery on a knee cartilage injury and Jahrome Hughes out with a hamstring issue. Tyran Wishart and Trent Toelau are the new-look halves. Joe Chan is also out, giving Oryn Keeley his first starting appearance in the Melbourne back row after his recent move from the Dolphins. Moses Leo returns to the side on the wing, pushing Siulagi Tuimalatu-Brown to the bench.

As has so often been the case in 2026, ill-discipline hurt the Roosters for much of their win against Parramatta. Things were a little clunky with three quarters of their regular spine missing, but the returns of Walker and Robson will provide a timely boost.

With seven games (and a bye) still to come, the Storm will feel confident of making up the four-point gap that sits between them and the top eight. The losses of Hughes and Munster are untimely, but they will feel confident knowing that Sua Faalogo was the star when they beat the Roosters 18-4 in May, while Harry Grant put in one of the best performances of his career when he steered the Storm home 34-30 in the absence of Munster and the early exit of Hughes at Allianz Stadium just under 12 months ago.

There are plenty of key match-ups in this one, but none bigger than hookers Robson and Grant. The two went head-to-head during the recent Origin series, with Robson coming out on top. Grant will be looking to get one back on his opposite number.

There will also be plenty keeping their eyes on the skies with the battle of wingers Daniel Tupou and Mark Nawaqanitawase against Will Warbrick and Moses Leo. For the Roosters, Tupou celebrated his 300th game last week with a hat-trick and continues to stand among the game’s top wingers, while Nawaqanitawase added another highlight reel moment with an outrageous flick to set up Toia. On the Storm side, Warbrick is a key aerial threat and will be required to shut down any attacking kicks, and Leo has shown his attacking prowess since returning to the side in Round 11.

Recent history is firmly on Melbourne’s side in this one, with the Storm winning 13 of their past 15 against the Roosters. The Roosters haven’t beaten the Storm in Sydney since the 2019 preliminary final and haven’t won a regular season game against the Storm in Sydney since 2015. The Roosters have only lost once against a bottom nine team this season: the Storm in Round 13.
