Match Preview
The Bulldogs return to Accor Stadium on Saturday night knowing every match from here carries enormous significance, but standing in their way is a Wests Tigers outfit beginning to rediscover belief under Benji Marshall.
While Canterbury will start favourites on home soil, this shapes as a far tougher assignment than the odds may suggest, particularly after last weekend’s horrible performance against Canberra. The Tigers also come off a heavy loss to the Warriors at Campbelltown.
Cameron Ciraldo’s side continues to compete with relentless intensity, and with Jacob Preston returning to the starting side, and Stephen Crichton expected to play once again, Canterbury boasts plenty of strike across the park. But, as has been the story of their season, unlocking a complete performance is becoming harder and harder.
The Tigers, however, arrive with genuine confidence. Jarome Luai has injected composure into the spine despite all of the outside noise, while young stars continue to flourish around him. If Api Koroisau can make his anticipated return from injury, it would provide another enormous boost through the middle, adding creativity and defensive steel at dummy half.
Luai will also be looking to silence the haters after his much-publicised move to the Parramatta Eels next season.
The key battle will be through the forwards. Canterbury’s pack prides itself on dominating possession and winning the ruck, but they were severely outplayed last week.
The Tigers have shown in recent weeks they’re prepared to match sides physically before striking with speed around the edges. If they can limit the Bulldogs’ second-phase play and force Lachlan Galvin into rushed kicking options, they’ll give themselves every opportunity to spring the win.
Canterbury leads the head-to-head 27-19 since 2000, with Wests winning the last two clashes.
