The PNG Chiefs have landed their marquee signing, with star five-eighth Jarome Luai agreeing to a two-year deal from 2028, with an option for a third season until 2030.
Player Background
Jarome Luai, who will be 31 when he joins the expansion club, has enjoyed a decorated career that includes four premierships with the Penrith Panthers. The creative playmaker has represented New South Wales at Origin level and has earned 16 Test caps for Samoa.
Current Form & Impact
Luai has been a driving force behind the Wests Tigers’ impressive 2026 campaign, guiding the side into the top four after the opening eight rounds. His leadership and game management have been pivotal in the Tigers’ resurgence this season.
Why It Matters for the PNG Chiefs
The move is understood to include significant tax-free benefits, making it one of the most lucrative deals in NRL history on a net basis. Luai is also widely regarded as the frontrunner to be named the inaugural captain of the PNG Chiefs when the new franchise enters the competition in 2028.
The signing follows reports that Luai travelled to Papua New Guinea over the weekend to meet with club officials. While unconfirmed reports have also linked winger Alex Johnston to the Chiefs, Luai becomes the first player to officially commit to the expansion side.
