Match Preview
The spotlight falls on CommBank Stadium this Saturday as the resurgent Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs look to continue their push toward the top eight against a refreshed Wests Tigers outfit boosted by the return of key stars.
The Tigers finally welcome back dynamic fullback Jahream Bula after a three-game absence with a shoulder injury, while captain Api Koroisau also returns from suspension.
The inclusion of experienced lock Alex Twal gives Benji Marshall’s side added steel through the middle, and the Tigers will hope those reinforcements can stabilise a season that has struggled for consistency.
The Bulldogs, however, arrive with momentum and confidence after rediscovering their attacking spark last round. Much of the attention will centre on powerhouse outside back Jacob Kiraz, who has again been named at fullback and shapes as one of the most dangerous players on the field.
His work rate out of yardage and ability to break tackles could prove decisive against a Tigers edge defence that has leaked points under pressure this season.
Canterbury’s forward pack also appears better equipped for the grind through the middle. If the Bulldogs win the ruck early and give their halves time and territory, they should create enough opportunities to expose a Tigers side still adjusting to returning personnel.
Jack Underhill adds an incredibly youthful hunger off the bench while Jed Reardon, who debuted last week, can cover a number of positions.
For the Tigers to cause the upset, they’ll need Bula and Koroisau to immediately click back into rhythm and generate second-phase football around the ruck. If the game becomes fast and open, the home side has the strike power to challenge Canterbury.
Canterbury holds a 27-18 head-to-head advantage since the Wests Tigers joined the NRL in 2000.
