Match Preview

Sunday afternoon footy for Round 13 kicks off in Brisbane, as the battered Broncos look to regain some form against a Dragons team desperate for their first win.

The Broncos sit in 11th after their first bye of the season last week. The week prior, they suffered a 42-12 loss to the Warriors at home in Magic Round. On the flip side, the Dragons remain anchored to the bottom of the ladder after suffering their 11th loss in a row this year, going down to the Warriors 30-12.

For the Broncos, there are hosts of inclusions, headlined by Payne Haas named to return from injury in the front row. Brendan Piakura also returns in the back row. The Origin contingent of Kotoni Staggs, Ezra Mam, Gehamat Shibasaki, and Pat Carrigan are all named to back up from Origin, but will be monitored after the game to confirm their availability. Jack Gosiewski and Grant Anderson return on the six-man bench.

For the Dragons, Moses Suli and Jacob Liddle are named to return from injury. Hayden Buchanan, Jaydn Su’a, and Christian Tuipulotu are all out, with Mathew Feagai coming in on the wing.

The key for the Broncos will be the return of Haas. They’ve conceded 112 points across their past three games, which by any standards is poor. With Haas back, he should help to solidify their middle. Their go-forward in attack should benefit too. They’ll be looking to win the ruck in the middle off the back of Haas, before getting the ball into the hands of Adam Reynolds and Reece Walsh to pepper the shaky edge defence of the Dragons.

The key for the Dragons will simply be discipline. If they want to get a win, they have to keep their errors and penalties to a minimum and make the Broncos work hard for every metre. Their forward pack have been tough over the past few weeks without reward, but if they can make the Broncos work, they’ll be in the contest. The one saving grace for the Dragons is the Broncos’ form, which hasn’t been great of late. The halves of Kyle Flanagan and Daniel Atkinson have struggled this year, but their game plan should centre around keeping Walsh under pressure and not allowing Haas to control the pace of the middle.

The Dragons have only won two of their past 12 games at Suncorp Stadium. Staggs has scored eight tries in his past six games against the Dragons.
