Match Preview

The Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs head north on Friday night looking to continue their push up the NRL ladder when they take on a confident Gold Coast Titans outfit at Cbus Super Stadium in Round 17.

Fresh off a thrilling golden-point win over Manly, the Bulldogs arrive with renewed confidence after skipper Stephen Crichton shifted to five-eighth and produced another clutch moment, slotting the match-winning field goal.

Cameron Ciraldo’s side has built its past seasons on grit, resilience, and one of the competition’s best defensive systems, but they’ll know this trip to the Gold Coast presents one of their toughest away assignments of the year.

The Titans are riding a wave of momentum after upsetting the undermanned Panthers last week. Their attack has looked far more dangerous in recent weeks, and the return to form of captain Tino Fa’asuamaleaui provides another significant boost to a forward pack that will test Canterbury through the middle.

Arama Hau has been a revelation in the second row, while Preston Campbell offers an unrivalled spark in the halves that will be tough to contain.

For the Bulldogs, much of the attention will again centre on the new-look spine. Stephen Crichton remains at five-eighth after last week’s successful switch, with Lachlan Galvin steering the side around the park and Matt Burton lining up in the centres. The Bulldogs will also be hoping Jacob Preston can make his long-awaited return from an arm injury after being named in the extended squad.

The key battle could come through the middle, where Max King — who celebrates his 100th Bulldogs game and 150th NRL game — Leo Thompson and Harry Hayes will be tasked with containing Fa’asuamaleaui, Moeaki Fotuaika, and Hau.

If Canterbury can win the ruck and slow the Titans’ attacking rhythm, they’ll give their dangerous outside backs plenty of opportunities. Enari Tuala is in career-best form, while Jacob Kiraz is carrying an injury but remains a dangerous ball runner.

History suggests this won’t be easy. The Bulldogs have found life on the road challenging this season, while the Titans have shown they can rise for big occasions in front of their home crowd.
