Match Preview
Both sides come into this match on the back of losses, and the Cowboys should have plenty to play for as club legend Jason Taumalolo celebrates his 300th NRL game, becoming the first Cowboy to reach that milestone.
The Panthers will be looking to bounce back after a disappointing 19–18 loss to the Titans last week — a game they would have expected to win comfortably, even without their Origin representatives. That trio of Nathan Cleary, Brian To’o, and Isaah Yeo return this week in a major boost, with Paul Alamoti shifting to centre and Jack Cogger and Liam Henry moving back to the bench.
There is just one change for the Cowboys, with Liam Sutton added to the interchange and John Bateman making way. Todd Payten’s men have struggled for consistency this season and currently sit ninth, just one win outside the top eight. They were unable to recover from a fast start by the Warriors last week, eventually going down 38–20, largely due to four tries from Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad.
There are some fascinating matchups right across the park, and the Panthers will need to negate the impact of Taumalolo in the middle, who will no doubt come out firing and try to get his side on the front foot.
Elsewhere, the battle of the fullbacks will be key, with the ever-reliable Dylan Edwards going up against Scott Drinkwater, who has the ability to create tries from anywhere on the field. Blaize Talagi and Jaxon Purdue are two of the most promising young playmakers in the competition, but both are still capable of errors when trying to force the big play. Whoever limits their mistakes will go a long way towards deciding this contest.
Despite last week’s setback, the Panthers’ defence remains comfortably the best in the competition, conceding just 43 points across their past four games. Across the season, Penrith are conceding just over 13 points per game. They allow very few clear opportunities, meaning the Cowboys’ playmakers must make the most of their red-zone chances.
