Soni Luke has been handed an NRL lifeline, signing a one-year contract with the North Queensland Cowboys for the 2026 season after appearing destined to slip out of the top grade.

The 29-year-old hooker, who turns 30 next month, was among 13 players told they would be leaving Penrith when the Panthers confirmed their list changes back in September. Despite being part of one of the most dominant eras in NRL history, Luke found opportunities limited, sitting behind Mitch Kenny as the club’s preferred dummy-half option.

Luke had been training with the South Sydney Rabbitohs’ NSW Cup side in recent weeks as he looked to keep his professional career alive. South Sydney’s reserve-grade squad has recently made headlines themselves, having just secured the return of Matt Dufty from Super League, but it is the Cowboys who have now moved decisively to secure Luke’s services.

The move to Townsville presents Luke with a fresh opportunity to re-establish himself at NRL level. Across his time with Penrith, he has made 29 first-grade appearances since debuting in 2022, showcasing his ability to bring speed, deception and attacking spark out of dummy-half when given minutes.

For North Queensland, Luke adds valuable experience and depth to their hooking rotation. His skill set contrasts with more traditional nine options, offering the Cowboys a genuine impact player capable of lifting tempo around the ruck, particularly against tiring middle forwards.

After being part of premiership-winning systems without locking down a regular starting role, Luke now faces a defining chapter of his career. At nearly 30, the Cowboys deal represents a final chance to prove he still belongs at NRL level — and in a side that values energy and momentum, he may yet find the platform he’s been searching for.

If Luke can recapture his best football in Townsville, the Cowboys’ decision to take a chance on him could prove a shrewd piece of recruitment ahead of the 2026 campaign.
