Match Preview
At the start of the 2026 season, these two clubs were among the favourites to finish near the bottom of the ladder. As they enter the run home, they are now hunting a finals berth. Both sides have nine wins and seven losses, with only for and against separating the seventh-placed Sea Eagles from the ninth-placed Cowboys.
For Manly, Kieran Foran has named Toluta’u Koula and Haumole Olakau’atu to back up from Wednesday night’s State of Origin decider. As a result, Corey Waddell slides back to the bench and Clayton Faulalo drops out of the side. Kobe Hetherington has also been named to start at prop after swapping roles with Simione Laiafi against Parramatta last weekend.
Todd Payten has also named all three of his Origin players, Reuben Cotter, Jeremiah Nanai and Murray Taulagi, to back up from the decider. In a further boost, captain Tom Dearden has been named among the reserves as he aims for his first appearance since round 10.
After seven wins from his first eight games as coach, the Kieran Foran effect might be starting to lose its magic. They’ve won only two of their past five matches, although both victories came at 4 Pines Park. They were poor in their 23-14 loss to the Eels last weekend, making 17 errors and missing 45 tackles. With a new halves combination in Jamal Fogarty and Joey Walsh still getting used to each other, the rest of the team needs to get the basics right.
It’s been a hot-and-cold season for North Queensland. Attack and defence have fluctuated throughout the season, ranging from outstanding to disappointing. Their 26-12 defeat of Penrith prior to the bye was their best performance of the season and broke a three-game losing streak. The Cowboys were up for the fight and will need to emulate that effort over the remaining weeks of the season if they are to break into the finals.
Manly holds the all-time head-to-head advantage, with 24 wins to 15 through 39 games. The Sea Eagles have won four straight meetings and eight of the past ten, including 38-6 at QCB Stadium in Round 7. Despite Manly’s recent dominance, the Cowboys have won five of the past seven at 4 Pines Park.
