Round 3 brought the group stage of the 2026 Rugby League World Cup to a dramatic conclusion, with Tonga’s thrilling 20-18 victory over Samoa proving the standout result of the weekend. The win secured top spot in the combined Pool B and C standings for Tonga, while Samoa survived England’s late charge to claim the final semi-final berth. England’s hopes remained alive for only a few hours after beating Papua New Guinea, but ultimately fell short on points differential.
Australia and New Zealand both sent strong statements ahead of the knockout stage, comfortably defeating the Cook Islands and Fiji respectively to book their semi-final places. The major winners of the round were Tonga, Samoa, Australia and New Zealand, while Fiji, Papua New Guinea and England saw their campaigns come to an end. With the field now reduced to four contenders, attention turns to blockbuster semi-finals between New Zealand and Tonga, and Australia and Samoa.

England vs Papua New Guinea
Because of the head-to-head tiebreaker rule (with Tonga finishing ahead of England if they’re equal on points), England needed to beat PNG by at least 69 points at WIN Stadium to stay in semi-final contention.
The points chase started well, with England leading 24-0 at half-time. But two quick tries to the Kumuls after the break (Dudley Dotoi, Gairo Voro) ended England’s pursuit, though late tries to Morgan Knowles and Mikey Lewis ensured they’d still win comfortably. While they won two Pool games out of three, England’s opening round loss to Tonga put them in sudden-death mode, with the head-to-head rule giving Tonga the advantage.
After a humbling loss to Samoa last weekend, PNG finished their tournament with an encouraging second half and prevented another blowout. The PNG Chiefs have a stable of locals to choose from to support their marquee signings, with London Broncos trio Morea Morea, Voro, and Finley Glare in the development squad. Playing his 32nd and final international for the Kumuls, Rhyse Martin finished with 272 points (PNG’s highest points-scorer), including 100 in the World Cup. He’ll join the Chiefs’ staff as the Football Operations Manager from 2027.
The Verdict: While they didn’t get the 69 differential to overtake Samoa, England are still a faint semi-final chance. Samoa’s points differential advantage is 46 (Samoa +132, England +86) and Tonga will need to win by 47 on Sunday. The winner of the sold-out Tonga vs Samoa game will finish first in Pool B + C.
New Zealand vs Fiji
While this game at Cbus Super Stadium was a play-off for the second semi-final spot in Pool A, New Zealand quickly put the result beyond doubt.
Though Fiji have had an excellent World Cup so far (beating Cook Islands and a close loss to Australia), New Zealand scored 13 tries to nil and led 48-0 at half-time. Casey McLean scored four tries and Jamayne Isaako kicked 13 goals from 13 attempts. Apisai Koroisau only played eight minutes before leaving the field with a suspected broken jaw.
After conceding a combined 40 points against Australia and the Cook Islands (including four intercept tries), New Zealand were aggressive in defence against Fiji for the full 80 minutes. The Kiwis’ forward depth allowed Naufahu Whyte (59 minutes), Erin Clark (49 minutes), and Xavier Willison (40 minutes) to come off the bench and maintain the pressure, which could be important for the finals.
But the lopsided scoreline didn’t take the heat out of the contest: Ronaldo Mulitalo and Brandon Wakeham were sent off in the 51st minute, and Jordan Miller was sin binned in the 77th minute. Mulitalo’s send-off for a high tackle could have finals implications depending on how long he’s suspended for.
The Verdict: With second spot in Pool A secured, New Zealand will prepare for a semi-final against the winner of Pool B + C. Will Kalyn Ponga return from his broken arm?
Australia vs Cook Islands
Australia’s rout of the Cook Islands at Queensland Country Bank Stadium was overdue after a clunky start to the World Cup, but we may not see how it benefited the Kangaroos until the semi-final.
Rua Ngatikaura gave the Cook Islands a 6-4 lead before the Kangaroos scored the next 11 tries, with hat-tricks to Jack Bostock and Tom Trbojevic. While they are wingers out of necessity in this World Cup, Trbojevic (seven) and Bostock (six) have scored 13 tries, with two hat-tricks each.
Jacob Preston was excellent in his third game for Australia (playing 80 minutes for 152 running metres, 26 tackles, and a try), while Reece Walsh all but confirmed he’ll be the fullback for the knockout games: a try, five try assists, and three goals. Ethan Strange made his Kangaroos debut, playing 36 minutes at lock and kicking a goal. Cameron Murray was a late withdrawal due to illness, with David Fifita replacing him on the six-man bench.
The Verdict: Australia will play the runner up of Pool B + C in their semi-final. They played close to their strongest side against the Cook Islands, so are unlikely to have too many changes.
Tonga vs Samoa
In a World Cup with a lot of one-sided results so far, Tonga’s win over Samoa at a sold out CommBank Stadium signalled the start of the tournament’s business end.
The atmosphere was set with the national anthems and the war dances (Tonga’s Sipi Tau and Samoa’s Siva Tau), and the game lived up to the hype, with no points until the 26th minute.
Brian To’o scored a double as Samoa came back from 14-4 down early in the second half. Coming on for Chanel Harris-Tavita (hamstring) in the 52nd minute, Ronald Volkman had a memorable World Cup cameo, scoring a wonderful try to put Samoa ahead 18-14 (and kicking the conversion) in the 69th minute. With Samoa keeping the footy alive, Volkman dummied and ran 10 metres to score. Depending on the severity of Harris-Tavita’s injury, Volkman may partner Jarome Luai again in the halves next weekend.
Addin Fonua-Blake gave Tonga the lead back three minutes later, and they held on despite some late attacking chances from Samoa, with Sualauvi Fa’alogo close to scoring in the left corner.
Tonga finished first in Pool B + C and officially eliminated England from finals contention, with England needing Tonga to win by 47 points to overtake Samoa.
The Verdict: New Zealand plays Tonga at McDonald Jones Stadium (Saturday, November 7) and Australia plays Samoa at Allianz Stadium (Sunday, November 8).
