Match Preview
The table-topping Penrith Panthers make the trip to south-east Queensland to take on a struggling Gold Coast Titans outfit on Saturday afternoon.
The Panthers come into this clash having dropped only one of their first 13 games of the season and will be heavy favourites, despite their representative players being named on the extended bench and likely to be rested. Conversely, the Titans have endured the opposite fortune, winning just three of their 13 matches to start the year, and will face a significant challenge if they are to claim a fourth victory this weekend.
Both sides have named their State of Origin representatives, but it remains to be seen whether they will actually take the field on Saturday. An injury to Casey McLean has seen Luke Garner named in the centres as his replacement, while coach Ivan Cleary has included his son and star halfback Nathan, along with Isaah Yeo and Brian To’o, on the extended bench.
This clash will feature two elite ball-running five-eighths going head-to-head in Jayden Campbell and Blaize Talagi. Campbell has been in strong form since returning to the No. 6 jersey, with rookie halfback Zane Harrison freeing the former fullback to play his natural game. On the other side, Talagi has been solid throughout the season without being spectacular, and could have an opportunity to shine if his superstar halves partner doesn’t back up from Origin.
The battle of the fullbacks pits two high-volume runners against each other in Keano Kini and Dylan Edwards. Despite his smaller frame, Kini regularly exceeds 200 running metres and will need to be at his best if the Titans are to compete. Edwards, who has missed Origin selection in recent matches, has another opportunity here to press his case with a strong performance.
Both sides also boast powerful back-row combinations. Beau Fermor and Arama Hau for the Titans will look to take the fight to Isaiah Papali’i and Liam Martin for the Panthers. All four edge forwards are capable of troubling defensive lines, meaning both halves partnerships will need to stay alert whenever sweeping plays develop down the edges.
Historically, this matchup has been heavily one-sided in favour of Penrith. The Panthers have won nine of their last 10 meetings against the Titans, with the Gold Coast’s most recent victory coming in 2019. Overall, Penrith have claimed 19 of the 26 clashes between the two sides.
