Match Preview
Two of the remaining three winless sides go head-to-head when the Gold Coast Titans host the St George Illawarra Dragons on Sunday afternoon.
The Titans come into this clash fresh from a stinging defeat to the Cowboys up at Townsville and will be hoping to use the energy of the home faithful for the first time this season and walk out as winners.
On the other side of the park, the Dragons started well against Parramatta, jumping out to a lead before eventually succumbing to a 30-20 defeat at the hands of the Eels.
The home side has named Jayden Campbell to start in the halfback jersey, after he was a late inclusion in the starting side for Lachlan Ilias. If the rumour mill is to be believed, there could be more line-up changes come kick-off, with whispers of AJ Brimson shifting to centre, Ilias to partner Campbell in the halves, and Moeaki Fotuaika to start from the bench.
Concussion and suspension have forced Dragons coach Shane Flanagan into a reshuffle of the forward pack, with the Couchman brothers (Toby and Ryan) to miss this clash. Young forwards Loko Pasifiki Tonga and Jacob Halangahu join the bench in their place, hoping to offer some impact off the pine.
This is a battle of two of the poorest defences in the league, so weather permitting, points could be free-flowing come Sunday afternoon. The Titans have conceded 98 points over the opening three games, equal third worst in the league, while the Dragons haven’t fared much better, conceding 91 points.
It’s the battle of the young star versus the wily veteran at the fullback position, with Keano Kini and Clinton Gutherson bringing two very different skillsets to their team at the back. Kini brings a high attacking work rate, running for over 150 metres in two of the opening three games and will surely be sniffing around the middle of the ruck waiting for a front rower to get an arm free for the offload.
While Gutherson may not have the same attacking firepower he once had, he still plays an integral role in marshalling the Dragons’ defence, and possesses a defensive work rate the envy of other fullbacks around the league. While they bring very different things to the match up, both are sure to play an integral role in their sides’ chances.
Titans captain Tino Fa’asuamaleaui has admitted that – by his own standards – he has had a poor start to the season, and will look to stamp his authority as one of the premier forwards in the game on this Dragons pack. If Tino can find his fire and lay a strong platform for his halves to work from, the Titans could trouble the scorers more often than they have in the opening three weeks against a sometimes fragile Dragons defensive line.
The Dragons’ dynamic duo of dummy halves Damien Cook and Jacob Liddle will be causing the Titans’ middle forwards nightmares in the lead up to the clash, with any lazy marker work likely to be punished swiftly by the fleet-footed 9s. If the forwards clock off for even a second, it could quickly turn into points for the visitors.
The Dragons have had the wood over their opponents in recent years, winning six of the last 10 between the two, including the last three straight.
Prediction
RLZ Tip: Titans by 6 points.
Bold call: One of the Dragons’ dummy halves to burrow their way over for a try close to the line.
