Match Preview
Friday night’s clash between Cronulla and Canterbury suddenly feels like a huge moment in both clubs’ seasons — especially for the Bulldogs.
After a hot start to 2026, Canterbury’s form has fallen away badly over the past month and the pressure is starting to build. Their heavy loss last weekend exposed plenty of issues defensively, and with the competition tightening, it’s getting close to crunch time.
Another couple of poor performances and the Bulldogs could find themselves slipping out of the finals race altogether.
The good news for Cameron Ciraldo is the return of Max King, with the hard-working middle forward set to add some much-needed steel through the middle of the park. Matt Burton and Kurt Mann also return, giving Canterbury a much stronger spine and more direction after looking flat in recent weeks.
Cronulla, meanwhile, also get major reinforcements with Ronaldo Mulitalo and Jesse Ramien back on deck. Their return instantly makes the Sharks more dangerous out wide and takes pressure off Nicho Hynes to create everything himself. Even with a few key forwards still sidelined, Cronulla look far more balanced heading into this one.
The battle through the middle could decide everything. If King, Leo Thompson and co can win the physical contest early, the Bulldogs are every chance of turning this into the gritty style of game they enjoy. But if the Sharks get quick ruck speed and space for Hynes to play direct, Cronulla’s edges could cause all sorts of problems.
There’s plenty on the line for both sides, but particularly Canterbury. A loss here would make the road to finals football a lot tougher and raise even more questions about where this season is heading.
Prediction
RLZ Tip: Sharks by 10
Bold call: Ronaldo Mulitalo scores a double – and there’ll be at least one sin bin in what shapes as a fiery contest.
