Salford Rugby League has officially been handed a fresh start, with the Rugby Football League confirming that Salford RLFC Ltd has been granted RFL Membership and approval to enter the 2026 Betfred Championship.
The decision follows one of the most turbulent periods in the club’s long history. Salford endured a disastrous Super League campaign, managing just three wins before being removed from the top flight under the revised 14-team competition structure. Matters worsened off the field when Salford City Reds (2013) Limited was officially liquidated on December 3, casting serious doubt over the club’s future.
That uncertainty has now been lifted.
RFL Backs New Salford Bid
In a statement released by the governing body, the RFL confirmed it had received three strong and detailed proposals aimed at preserving professional rugby league in the city of Salford. After a thorough assessment process, the submission from Salford RLFC Ltd was approved, with the RFL citing its focus on sustainable governance, financial responsibility and long-term stability.
The RFL noted that the successful bid aligns closely with its wider strategic objectives for the professional game, particularly around club sustainability and community engagement.
Ekoku: “Strong Platform for Stability and Growth”
RFL Interim CEO Abi Ekoku welcomed the outcome, highlighting the quality of submissions and the importance of safeguarding the club’s future.
“The quality of proposals we received reflects the strength of commitment to Rugby League in Salford,” Ekoku said.
“Our decision has been taken with the long-term interests of the club, the local community at its heart and the sport of rugby league as a whole. We are confident this outcome provides a strong platform for club stability and growth moving forward.”
A New Chapter Begins
While Salford’s fall from Super League was a sobering moment, the RFL’s approval gives the club a clear pathway back through the professional ranks. Entry into the 2026 Championship offers time for the new ownership group to rebuild both on and off the field, restore confidence among supporters, and re-establish Salford as a credible force within the game.
The RFL also expressed hope that all parties involved in the bidding process can work collaboratively in the future, acknowledging a shared commitment to delivering success for rugby league in Salford.
After months of uncertainty, the message is clear: Salford rugby league lives on — and the rebuild starts now.
