Match Preview
With the race to the finals heating up and top-eight spots still up for grabs, this is a must-win clash for both sides.
The Canberra Raiders head into this contest full of confidence and with their finals hopes firmly back on track. After Round 8, the Raiders were sitting second-last on the ladder, but a three-game winning streak over the Dragons, Bulldogs and Rabbitohs has transformed their season. They have climbed to 12th place, are level on points with the 11th-placed Melbourne Storm, and sit just two wins outside the top eight.
The story is very different for the Wests Tigers. One of the competition’s surprise packets early in the season, the Tigers were sitting third on the ladder after eight rounds, with five wins and a draw from their opening eight matches. Their impressive start had fans dreaming of a fairytale run similar to the club’s 2005 premiership campaign. While they remain a mathematical chance of reaching the finals, their recent form suggests otherwise. The Tigers have lost their past five matches and nine of their last 11, leaving their finals aspirations hanging by a thread.
After finishing as the standout regular-season team in 2025, the Raiders have endured a more challenging 2026 campaign, with inconsistent form and a growing injury toll disrupting their momentum. At full strength, Canberra arguably boasts the most physical and intimidating forward pack in the NRL, and the recent returns of Josh Papalii and Noah Martin have coincided with an immediate return to winning ways. The season-ending Achilles injury to Hudson Young is a significant setback, but the Raiders are well placed to absorb the loss. English international Matty Nicholson has returned from injury, while Zach Hosking’s shift back to the second row strengthens the back-row rotation.
Discipline proved costly for the Wests Tigers in their 32-point defeat last week, with multiple sin bins leaving them little chance of competing. More concerning, however, has been the dramatic decline in results since co-captain Jarome Luai signed with the PNG Chiefs on 28 April. Since that announcement, the Tigers have lost nine of their last 11 matches, with recent performances particularly alarming. Over their past three games, they have conceded 84 points while scoring just 16, with a noticeable lack of intensity and resilience. Their last genuinely competitive performance came in Round 17, when they suffered a heartbreaking last-minute defeat to the Knights in difficult wet-weather conditions.
The Tigers need a significant lift across the park and cannot rely solely on their marquee players to reverse their fortunes. Their forward pack must match Canberra through the middle and at least achieve parity, while the outside backs need to capitalise on opportunities against a Raiders defence that has been vulnerable at times, ranking fourth-worst in the competition for points conceded. The Tigers will also be boosted by the availability of star halfback Adam Doueihi after he successfully challenged his charge at the judiciary, with Javon Andrews expected to make way. However, Doueihi has also featured in each of the club’s past four defeats, highlighting that broader improvements are required.
For Canberra, the formula is straightforward: continue doing what has worked. Their powerful forward pack has recently laid the platform, allowing a dangerous backline to pile on the points. The Raiders have scored 98 points across their past three matches and will be confident of maintaining that attacking output. Ethan Strange has been in outstanding form and has returned to being one of the competition’s most difficult players to contain. While the suspension of Owen Pattie is a loss, the experienced Tom Starling is expected to shoulder the bulk of the hooking duties and play out the game.
Recent meetings between these sides have been relatively competitive, with the Raiders holding a narrow 3-2 advantage over the past five encounters. However, history strongly favours Canberra at GIO Stadium, where the Wests Tigers have not recorded a victory since 2018. It is expected to be a dry track.
