Match Preview

There are some games that feel like genuine litmus tests, and Saturday night’s clash between the Bulldogs and Warriors at Accor Stadium is one of them.

For the Warriors, it’s another opportunity to strengthen their push for the minor premiership as they continue to chase Penrith at the top of the ladder. For Canterbury, it’s a chance to prove they belong in the September conversation after rediscovering some momentum with four wins from their past five matches, including last week’s emphatic 32-0 shutout of the Wests Tigers.

History also favours Cameron Ciraldo’s men. The Bulldogs have won the past three meetings between the clubs, including a convincing 32-14 victory in Round 23 last season, and they’ve made Accor Stadium a difficult place for visiting sides.

The biggest boost for Canterbury is the return of captain Stephen Crichton after being rested following his Round 19 arm and neck scare. His inclusion gives the Bulldogs another level of creativity and composure in attack, while the return of powerhouse second-rower Viliame Kikau to the starting side adds plenty of strike on the left edge.

The key battle could well be between Crichton and Warriors playmaker Chanel Harris-Tavita. Harris-Tavita has quietly become one of the competition’s most effective organisers this season, but Crichton’s ability to square up the defensive line and create opportunities for those around him could be the difference in a tight contest.

Out wide, the yardage battle between Jacob Kiraz and Dallin Watene-Zelezniak promises to be fascinating. Both wingers consistently top 150 metres a game, and whichever side wins those early carries will go a long way towards controlling field position.

In the middle, Max King and Leo Thompson face arguably their biggest challenge of the season against James Fisher-Harris, Mitch Barnett, and Wayde Egan.

If Canterbury can slow Egan’s service and limit Fisher-Harris’ post-contact metres, they’ll force the Warriors away from the fast, free-flowing style that has made them one of the NRL’s most dangerous attacking teams.

The Bulldogs’ blueprint is relatively straightforward. Win the middle, dominate kick returns through Connor Tracey and Kiraz, and unleash Crichton and Kikau against a retreating defensive line. If they allow Egan to dictate ruck speed, however, the Warriors have enough strike power across the park to punish them.

The Warriors deserve favouritism based on their season as a whole, but the Bulldogs are building confidence at exactly the right time and welcome back two genuine game-breakers.
