St Helens have confirmed the appointment of Paul Rowley as their new head coach on a three-year contract, succeeding Paul Wellens following the conclusion of the 2025 Super League season.
Rowley joins the Red V after a challenging campaign with Salford Red Devils, where his side managed just three wins from 27 matches and were relegated to the Championship following their 15th-place finish in the IMG rankings. Despite the struggles on the field and ongoing financial difficulties off it, Rowley maintained strong respect within the game for his attacking philosophy and leadership amid adversity.
At St Helens, he replaces club legend Paul Wellens, who departed after three seasons in charge. Wellens guided Saints to 60 victories from 95 matches and continued the club’s proud tradition of consistency and competitiveness at the top end of Super League.
Rowley’s move represents both a fresh challenge and an opportunity to rebuild his coaching credentials at one of rugby league’s most successful institutions. Known for his innovative approach and emphasis on expansive play, he will inherit a squad still stacked with experience and representative talent, aiming to restore the Red V to silverware contention in 2026 and beyond.
St Helens are expected to confirm the rest of Rowley’s coaching staff in the coming weeks ahead of pre-season training.
