Match Preview
There is plenty riding on Friday night’s clash at CommBank Stadium, but for the Bulldogs, the equation is particularly simple: their season is effectively on the line.
Canterbury head into Round 26 sitting ninth and desperately trying to keep their finals hopes alive, while second-placed Penrith remain firmly in the hunt for the minor premiership.
Interestingly, both teams arrive with identical 3–2 records from their past five games, and both produced impressive wins last weekend. Penrith knocked off Melbourne 22–14, while the Bulldogs rediscovered their attacking spark with a thumping 44–14 victory over St George Illawarra.
Canterbury should also take confidence from its previous meeting with the Panthers this season.
The Bulldogs stunned Penrith 32–16 in Round 6, forcing 16 errors and controlling much of the contest through the kicking game of Lachlan Galvin. With Jack Cole replacing the suspended Jack Cogger at five-eighth, expect Canterbury to again send plenty of traffic down that side of the field.
The biggest challenge, though, is Nathan Cleary.
Penrith’s champion halfback remains one of rugby league’s great game managers, averaging more than 500 kicking metres this season. If Canterbury’s middle of Max King, Leo Thompson, and Jaeman Salmon cannot generate momentum, Cleary has the ability to slowly suffocate them through field position.
There are attacking threats everywhere. Brian To’o is coming off a hat-trick and 225 metres against Melbourne, while the recently re-signed Jacob Preston has remarkably scored six tries in his past four appearances against Penrith.
The Bulldogs have shown they can beat Penrith. The question is whether they can do it again with their finals hopes hanging in the balance.
Expect a physical, finals-like contest that remains tight deep into the second half.
