Round 6 delivered statement results across the competition, with the Tigers and Panthers setting the pace as momentum shifted elsewhere on the ladder. From streak‑ending wins to pressure‑building losses, the weekend offered early clarity on which trends are taking hold as the season settles.

Penrith (10 points, +134) and the Wests Tigers (10 points, +64) sit equal first after Round 6.

They are followed by the NZ Warriors (8 points, +76) and North Queensland (8 points, +16), with South Sydney (8 points, +12), Newcastle (8 points, +12), Canterbury‑Bankstown (8 points, +5) and the Sydney Roosters (8 points, ‑23) rounding out the top eight.

It was an eventful round: the Warriors ended a 17-game losing streak against Melbourne, Canterbury ended Penrith’s undefeated run (and spoiled Nathan Cleary’s 200th NRL appearance), St George Illawarra remained winless, Daly Cherry-Evans scored his 100th NRL try, Sunia Turuva scored a hat-trick, and the Gold Coast put 50 on Parramatta (the second time the Eels have conceded 50+ points this season).

Turuva (three tries) and Jahream Bula (two tries) scored five tries between them as the Wests Tigers beat Newcastle at Campbelltown Sports Stadium. The Tigers won their third straight game to continue their wonderful start to the season, backing up their Easter Monday Golden Point win over Parramatta. GAME BREAKER: The Tigers raced to a 16-0 lead after 15 minutes, with Turuva scoring his first two tries, and led 28-4 at half-time.

A boilover looked possible when Canterbury led Penrith 16–0 after 22 minutes at Accor Stadium, but another double to Thomas Jenkins (14 tries this season) tied the scores early in the second half. Jenkins’ second try proved to be Penrith’s final points of the night, with Jacob Preston and Sitili Tupouniua sealing the game for Canterbury. GAME BREAKER: Canterbury held a 22–16 lead for 20 minutes; unable to extend the margin, while Penrith could not find a way back. It took an offload from Lachlan Galvin to Preston – who spun out of Blaize Talagi’s tackle – before passing inside to Tupouniua.

North Queensland won a dramatic XXXX Derby at Suncorp Stadium. The Cowboys took advantage of an understrength Brisbane side (missing Reece Walsh, Adam Reynolds, and Ben Hunt) to lead 18-6 after 28 minutes, but Brisbane fought back to lead 30-24 with 20 minutes left. Thomas Duffy and Scott Drinkwater traded field goals as a 30-30 deadlock became 31-31, before Heilum Luki’s try sealed the Cowboys’ win. Written off as a bottom four team at the start of the season, this was North Queensland’s fourth straight win, and their first win against Brisbane since 2022. Brisbane have already lost three out of four at home this season. GAME BREAKER: Drinkwater had some crucial moments in the Cowboys’ win: he set up their first two tries (Jaxon Purdue in the 13th minute and Zac Laybutt in the 15th), and scored himself in the 34th minute to give North Queensland a 24-12 lead; then he kicked a field goal to tie the scores with four minutes left.

Leading 18–14 at half‑time, the Warriors won the second half 20–0 against Melbourne – the second straight game at AAMI Park in which the Storm were held scoreless after the break – with Dallin Watene‑Zelezniak scoring a double. It was the Warriors’ first win over Melbourne since 2015 and their first victory in Melbourne since 2014. GAME BREAKER: After Melbourne erased an early 12-2 deficit to lead 14-12, Watene-Zelezniak’s first try put the Warriors back in front in the 30th minute. They were never headed from there.

  • Reuben Garrick scored a double as Manly Warringah beat St George Illawarra at WIN Stadium.
  • Canberra and the Sydney Roosters claimed the double‑header wins at Perth’s Optus Stadium. Canberra held off South Sydney after leading 24–4 at half‑time (with doubles to Hudson Young and Kaeo Weekes), while the Roosters recovered from a 22–6 deficit against Cronulla‑Sutherland, led by doubles to Daniel Tupou and Daly Cherry‑Evans.
  • Sialetili Faeamani, Jayden Campbell, and Phillip Sami all scored doubles as the Gold Coast beat Parramatta at CommBank Stadium.
