The North Queensland Cowboys have re-signed reliable five-eighth Jake Clifford on a two-year contract extension until the end of 2028.
Clifford, 28, has committed his immediate future to the Cowboys at a time of significant change in the club’s spine.
Player Background
A Tully Tigers junior, Clifford made his NRL debut for the Cowboys in 2018 against St George Illawarra. After 42 games in his first stint, he spent time with the Newcastle Knights (2021-22) and had a season in the Super League with Hull FC in 2023 before returning to North Queensland in 2024. The experienced playmaker has now played over 100 NRL games in his career.
Current Form & Impact
Clifford is enjoying a strong 2026 season, scoring 4 tries and providing 7 try assists in just 9 appearances. He sits second at the club for try assists, behind only fullback Scott Drinkwater. His combination of creativity, kicking game and toughness has been vital in the halves.
Why It Matters for the Cowboys
This extension comes as the Cowboys prepare for life after star fullback Scott Drinkwater, who will join the St George Illawarra Dragons on a three-year deal from 2027. Retaining Clifford provides crucial stability and experience in the playmaking positions as the club rebuilds its spine.
Clifford has been named at five-eighth for tonight’s Round 7 clash against the Parramatta Eels at Queensland Country Bank Stadium, where he will look to continue his solid form.
The 28-year-old’s decision to stay in North Queensland is seen as a “no-brainer” after he was challenged in pre-season and has responded with some of the best football of his career. His re-signing sends a strong message of continuity as the Cowboys navigate the post-Drinkwater era.
