While Melbourne (4 points, +74), the NZ Warriors (4 points, +58), Penrith (4 points, +46), and Newcastle (4 points, +30) remained unbeaten after two rounds, Round 2 will be remembered for Alex Johnston’s historic milestone.

The South Sydney winger passed Ken Irvine to become Australian rugby league’s all-time leading tryscorer with his 213th career try.

The Wests Tigers (4 points, +28), Canterbury-Bankstown (4 points, +1), Cronulla-Sutherland (2 points, +20), and South Sydney (2 points, +2) rounded out the top eight.

Johnston needed two tries against traditional rivals the Sydney Roosters at Allianz Stadium to break the record. He got the first one after 30 minutes and the record-breaking 213th (running 40 metres off a Latrell Mitchell offload) just after half-time. Any concerns about the crowd invading the field were unfounded: the celebrations at Allianz Stadium were quick and peaceful, with the game resuming after 16 minutes. GAME BREAKER: While the game could have fizzled out after Johnston’s achievement, the Roosters regained the lead after half-time and secured the win when James Tedesco scored off a Daly Cherry-Evans grubber. DCE also scored his first try at his new club.

A hat-trick from Sualauvi Faalogo sparked a run of 28 points in 18 minutes for Melbourne against St George Illawarra at WIN Stadium. While Melbourne led 18-14 at half-time, Valentine Holmes’ second try gave the Dragons a 20-18 lead after 52 minutes. Faalogo already has five tries in two matches as he looks to lock in the Storm’s fullback jersey. GAME BREAKER: Faalogo scored two tries in three minutes (62nd and 65th) and completed his hat-trick with six minutes remaining.

Parramatta rebounded from their Melbourne loss with a comeback win against Brisbane. There was plenty of entertainment at Suncorp Stadium: 72 points, 12 tries, and doubles to Kelma Tuilagi (Parramatta), Isaiah Iongi (Parramatta), Reece Walsh (Brisbane), and Kotoni Staggs (Brisbane). Trailing 20-6 after 26 minutes, Parramatta scored the next three tries to lead 22-20 at half-time. Jonah Pezet sealed the win for the Eels, chasing his own grubber kick. GAME BREAKER: While Pezet scored the match-winner at his future home ground, three tries in five minutes to Ryley Smith, Tuilagi, and Iongi gave Parramatta the half-time lead.

Last year’s wooden spooners Newcastle continued their bright start under Justin Holbrook, beating Manly Warringah at 4 Pines Park, although injuries to Kalyn Ponga (hamstring) and Dylan Brown (MCL) could cause headaches in the coming weeks. Newcastle led 30-10 at half-time and Dominic Young’s second try in the 46th minute ensured Manly (who have now lost two in a row at home) couldn’t come back. GAME BREAKER: Leading 12-10 after 20 minutes, Newcastle scored three tries to earn their commanding half-time lead (Ponga, Fletcher Hunt, Tyson Frizell).

  • The NZ Warriors dominated Canberra at Go Media Stadium. Doubles to Dallin Watene-Zelezniak and Leka Halasima helped the Warriors outscore the Raiders 34-0 after half-time.
  • The Wests Tigers opened their season with a win over North Queensland at Leichhardt Oval (doubles to Kai Pearce-Paul and Luke Laulilii).
  • Three tries in nine minutes either side of half-time (a double to Thomas Jenkins) sealed Penrith’s win against Cronulla-Sutherland at Carrington Park.
  • The Dolphins gave Queensland their first win of 2026, beating the Gold Coast at Suncorp Stadium. The Dolphins came from 14-0 down with Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow scoring the winning try.
