Match Preview
The Dolphins host the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks in a crucial Round 19 clash at Kayo Stadium in Redcliffe, with both teams pushing to secure a top-four spot.
The Dolphins have enjoyed an outstanding season, winning eight straight games before their streak ended with a 13-12 loss to the Newcastle Knights at McDonald Jones Stadium last weekend. They fought hard against the Knights, with both sides displaying strength in defence, but it was a final field goal by the Knights’ Dylan Brown that sealed the victory.
Last Sunday at Suncorp Stadium, the Sharks produced one of their most dominant performances of the season against an out-of-form Broncos outfit. The Sharks downed the Broncos 28-16 at home.
The Sharks will try to bring that same energy to their match with the Dolphins this weekend in their quest for redemption after the Dolphins defeated them 38-10 at Ocean Protect Stadium in Round 3 of this year. However, the Dolphins remain confident, having won three of their last four games against the Sharks.
The Dolphins sit fifth on the NRL ladder, with the Sharks closing in on them in sixth place.
The Dolphins have named several Origin stars in their extended squad. The only change will be Ray Stone’s return. Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, Selwyn Cobbo, Max Plath, Thomas Flegler, and Jack Bostock will be evaluated following Wednesday night.
Following their win over the Broncos last weekend, the Sharks have named an unchanged starting side, with Origin players Briton Nikora, Addin-Fonua Blake, and Blayke Brailey listed as reserves, while Samuel Stonestreet also returns to the extended bench.
The Dolphins’ defensive line battle could begin with key players Kodi Nikorima, Jamayne Isaako and Herbie Farnworth facing the Sharks’ Braydon Trindall, KL Iro and Sione Katoa, with Ronaldo Mulitalo posing an additional threat on the outside edges for the Dolphins’ defence.
The Dolphins’ Jamayne Isaako has scored 12 tries in the past ten games. Katoa crossed in the opening eight minutes against the Broncos and went on to complete a hat-trick, Mulitalo has scored three tries in two games against the Dolphins.
The Dolphins’ Herbie Farnworth and the Sharks’ KL Iro, both skilled and dangerous centres, could potentially square off in an exciting duel. They are unpredictable, fast on their feet, and know how to use the field of play efficiently. This season, Farnworth has scored eight tries, 10 line breaks, 104 tackle breaks, and an average of 165 running metres, while Iro has scored nine tries, eight line breaks, 44 tackle breaks, and an average of 149 running metres.
Felise Kaufusi brings experience and defensive steel to the Dolphins’ forward pack, while Jesse Colquhoun continues to impress for Cronulla.
If Dolphins fullback Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow is cleared to play, the Sharks’ firepower faces the threat of being extinguished and their defence tested. Tabuai-Fidow has 11 tries in six games for Redcliffe and is a key asset to the Dolphins.
Will Kennedy will play his 150th game for the club this weekend, while Oregon Kaufusi is set to bring up his 150th NRL appearance if he takes the field.
This weekend’s clash may be the most difficult yet, but it promises relentless action and big hits owing to both teams’ power and athleticism as both sides look to strengthen their credentials as genuine top-four contenders.
