Match Preview

The Bulldogs play host at Accor Stadium on Saturday evening, looking to continue their push towards the NRL finals, up against a Canberra Raiders side desperate to keep its own season alive.

Despite an inconsistent campaign, Cameron Ciraldo’s men have shown they remain one of the competition’s toughest teams to break down since an apparent easing of the Six Agains by referees.

Their defensive resilience has been the foundation of their success, while the return of key personnel following the State of Origin period should provide another timely boost.

Jacob Preston’s likely inclusion strengthens the forward pack, while Stephen Crichton’s leadership and class continue to set the standard across the park since moving to five-eighth. Jacob Kiraz’s fitness will also be closely monitored after recent knee and rib cartilage concerns.

The Raiders arrive in Sydney with plenty to prove after a disappointing first half of the season. Ricky Stuart’s side has shown flashes of the attacking football that made them dangerous in recent years, but inconsistency and defensive lapses have prevented them from building momentum.

They’ll need strong performances from their experienced middle forwards if they’re to match Canterbury’s physicality. They welcome back young gun Noah Martin and prop Josh Papalii.

These sides produced a tight contest earlier this season, with the Bulldogs grinding out a hard-fought 14-10 victory in Canberra. Expect another arm wrestle, where field position, discipline, and patience will be every bit as important as attacking flair.

For Canterbury, controlling the ruck and limiting Canberra’s second-phase play will be critical. If Lachlan Galvin, Matt Burton, and Crichton can dictate territory with their kicking games, and Crichton continues to create opportunities on both sides of the ball, the Bulldogs should gradually wear the Raiders down.
