The rumour mill was put to rest today as Carter Gordon officially inked a deal to join the Queensland Reds for the 2026 Super Rugby season. The move marks his return to the 15-man code after a challenging foray into rugby league — and comes following a spell in the Gold Coast Titans system that few would call a success.
From Union Prodigy to League Gamble
Gordon, a rising talent in Australian rugby union, had been earmarked for big things since his schoolboy days. His playmaking acumen, ability to take the ball to the line and composure under pressure earned him early recognition. He eventually became a regular in Super Rugby and was selected to represent the Wallabies.
However, in mid-2024 Gordon made the bold decision to switch codes and signed with the Gold Coast Titans for the 2025 and 2026 NRL seasons. The move, while ambitious, would prove to be fraught with setbacks — notably a serious back injury (a spinal fluid leak) that hampered his ability to train and compete.
Even during his league tenure, Gordon spent much of his time with the Tweed Seagulls (in the Queensland Cup), where he was a fixture in their line-up. Across his stint there, he tallied 38 points, breaking them down as 5 tries and 9 goals. His regular presence in that side showed flashes of his skillset adapting to league structures, but it never fully translated to success at the NRL level.
When opportunities came, they were scarce. In fact, Gordon’s sole appearance in first grade came in the final round of the Titan’s season, a 36–28 win over the Wests Tigers. That match coincided with the final appearance of NRL veteran Kieran Foran, who bowed out of his league career in that very game.
Given the injury troubles and limited NRL exposure, it’s fair to say the league chapter did not unfold as Gordon or many observers hoped.
