Match Preview
Saturday night features two sides that haven’t had dream seasons, both now determined not to finish last. The Rabbitohs have managed to briefly lift themselves from the foot of the table, while the Eels find themselves in their highest position all year, sitting 13th.
The Rabbitohs’ injury crisis deepens this week, with Lachlan Hubner sidelined and Shaquai Mitchell set to take his place. In more encouraging news, Cody Walker has been named in the reserves and could return to offer a much-needed spark. The Eels, meanwhile, have named an unchanged 17 following their win over the Cowboys. Isaiah Iongi has been listed in the reserves and may feature, which could prompt a minor reshuffle to the spine.
South Sydney’s season has been torn apart by injuries, at times struggling to field a full squad. The return of Latrell Mitchell has brought some much-needed stability, and they’ll once again rely heavily on his influence to steer them around the park. Brandon Smith, another marquee name, starts from the bench and will be eager to provide impact for a club that has thrown him a lifeline.
The Eels, in contrast, have only a few injury concerns and are beginning to form effective combinations among their younger players. Josh Addo-Carr has arguably been their signing of the season, with another standout performance last week that included two tries. With this being the second leg of Indigenous Round, he’ll be fired up to once again represent his culture with pride. Another standout performer has been Luca Moretti, who is quickly earning a reputation as a tough, no-nonsense enforcer. He only runs in one direction — forward — and more often than not he breaks through first contact. The Rabbitohs will have their hands full containing him.
Recent history favours Souths, who defeated the Eels by 13+ points in both clashes last year. Parramatta’s last wins against the Rabbitohs came in 2023 and 2019, with Souths otherwise dominating the match-up in recent years.
The Rabbitohs won’t be easy beats. Their win last week gives them some much-needed confidence and belief. That said, the Eels’ form over the past month has been strong, and with a side much closer to full strength than their opponents, they may just have the edge to notch back-to-back victories for the first time this season.
