Match Preview
On Sunday, the Canterbury‑Bankstown Bulldogs are hosted by the Wests Tigers at CommBank Stadium in what promises to be a fast-paced round 22 clash. The Bulldogs will be without fullback Connor Tracey, who remains sidelined for several weeks due to an abductor injury. That spells a shift of roles. Jacob Kiraz will move into the No. 1 jersey, reverting from wing duties to cover the fullback role.
For the Tigers, new additions include Jahream Bula, back from a hamstring injury, while Samuela Fainu and Royce Hunt are on the bench as they search for an 80-minute performance.
The Bulldogs have shown strong form defensively throughout the season, but being boosted by performances from Matt Burton and Lachlan Galvin in the halves saw their attack hit top gear last week. It’s Galvin’s first game against his former club following his heavily publicised move. The Bulldogs played arguably their best game of the season last weekend, beating Manly 42-4 at Allianz Stadium.
While the Tigers have welcomed some fresh faces, their season has been inconsistent. Injuries and roster turnover have affected continuity. Their previous recent record at has been patchy, no matter the venue, with some strong performances sprinkled in. Their round 20 win against the Gold Coast (21-20) broke an eight-game losing run, but they came back to reality with a 36-2 loss to Penrith last weekend.
Kiraz’s shift to fullback adds attacking spark and pace, but questions remain about his defensive alignment under the high ball. It’s not a position he’s very familiar with although he has played it in the past, including in the World Cup for Lebanon.
Expect the Bulldogs to handle the backline reshuffle and bring structure through Burton and Galvin, and dogged execution in defence.
