The Newcastle Knights have secured the signature of promising playmaker Sandon Smith on a four-year contract that will keep him at the club until the end of the 2029 NRL season.

The 22-year-old Gosford junior joins the Knights from the Sydney Roosters, where he made his NRL debut in 2023 and went on to play 46 matches across two seasons. During his time at the Roosters, Smith proved to be a reliable back-up to halfback Sam Walker, showcasing his versatility and composure in key moments.

Smith’s signing comes as the Knights look to bolster their halves depth following the departure of Jack Cogger, who recently signed a three-year deal with the Penrith Panthers after helping steer Newcastle to a finals berth in 2024.

The acquisition of Smith ensures the Knights maintain strong competition for positions in their spine, with the young playmaker offering flexibility to play at halfback, five-eighth, or hooker if required.

At the Roosters, Smith earned praise for his attacking spark, crisp passing game, and steady temperament under pressure — traits that Newcastle fans will hope to see on display in red and blue next season.

The move also represents a homecoming of sorts for Smith, who grew up on the Central Coast and progressed through local pathways before joining the Roosters’ system.

With pre-season training set to begin in November, Smith is expected to link up with his new teammates in the coming weeks as the Knights prepare for the 2026 campaign.
