Match Preview
Fresh off the back of important victories, the Gold Coast Titans and Brisbane Broncos meet on Easter Saturday, with both sides eager to build momentum.
The Titans claimed their first win of Josh Hannay’s tenure with a 22-14 victory over the Dragons, off the back of an impressive defensive performance at Cbus Super Stadium. The Broncos, meanwhile, were forced to work hard to beat the Dolphins in Brisbane.
There’s no need to change a winning formula for the Titans, with coach Hannay sticking with AJ Brimson at centre and Klese Haas starting over Moeaki Fotuaika in the front row.
For Brisbane, Payne Haas returns after missing last week’s win with a shoulder complaint, pushing Xavier Willison to the bench. There are also two changes to Michael Maguire’s backline, with Grant Anderson (knee) and Josiah Karapani (disciplinary reasons) both unavailable. Jesse Arthars makes his first appearance for the season after starting the year in the Hostplus Cup, while Gehamat Shibasaki returns to the centres after being dropped to the bench two weeks ago and Deine Mariner sliding out to the wing.
Discipline has been an issue for both teams early in the season, with the two teams having both conceded a league-high 26 penalties. The Broncos have also made 52 errors, with the Titans having made the fourth-worst with 47. One stat where the two teams differ greatly is missed tackles, with the Broncos missing 39.3 per game (third most), while the Titans are missing 29.3 (second fewest).
All eyes will be on the front row battle between Tino Fa’asuamaleaui and Payne Haas as the two representative giants aim to lay the platform for their teams. Fa’suamaleaui’s work rate has been down slightly in 2026, he admitted prior to round 4 that he was “not happy with my game,” but a local derby could be just the thing he needs to get his season going. Haas has been hitting the same levels he typically hits, however with his shoulder issue, it could even the playing field just a touch.
The fledgling combination between Jayden Campbell and Arama Hau is already bearing fruit for Gold Coast. Campbell created two tries – including the match-winner – for the rookie backrower in round 4, following on from a double of his own the week before. Ezra Mam and Brendan Piakura are going to have to be at their best if they want to shut down that threat.
History favours the Broncos heavily in this match-up, with 26 wins to the Titans’ 13 since 2007, including both meetings in 2025, breaking a rare Titans three-match winning run. The Broncos have won 12 of the 19 matches played at Cbus Super Stadium, including three of the past four.
High scores and comebacks have been key features of recent matches between the two teams, with both sides scoring at least three tries in seven of their past ten meetings. Teams leading at half time have only won three matches in that time. Four games were won by the team trailing at half time, while the three games that were even were won by the team that trailed until the final few minutes of the first half.
