The Roosters surged to the top of the NRL ladder with a statement win over Penrith, while the Warriors and Dolphins strengthened their top-four credentials. Elsewhere, Canberra dealt a major blow to Cronulla’s finals hopes, and South Sydney moved a step closer to ending their finals drought.

Ladder

The Sydney Roosters (38 points, +163) are the new ladder leaders, followed by Penrith (36, +286), the NZ Warriors (36, +276), and the Dolphins (34, +120). Cronulla-Sutherland (32, +165), Newcastle (32, +76), South Sydney (30, +82), and North Queensland (28, -78) make up the top eight. The Roosters and Dolphins moved up, while the Panthers and Sharks moved down.

Review

The Sydney Roosters beat Penrith at CommBank Stadium in a potential Grand Final preview. The top two game lived up to the hype, with the Roosters (aiming for their first minor premiership since 2018) overtaking Penrith in first place: the Panthers have been on top of the ladder since Round 4. Daly Cherry-Evans showed why the Roosters signed him for one last premiership run, scoring both of their tries. The Roosters kept Penrith scoreless for 66 minutes before Moses Leota scored the Panthers’ only try. The Disruptor rule – which seemed to be dormant for months – reappeared to deny Robert Toia a try in the first half, with Mark Nawaqanitawase ruled to have disrupted Thomas Jenkins. GAME BREAKER: Leading 8-6 after 76 minutes, the Roosters secured victory off a Penrith goal-line drop-out. Cody Ramsey caught Nathan Cleary’s short kick, then Cherry-Evans scored the winning try on the last tackle of the next set.

South Sydney are one step closer to the finals after beating Canterbury-Bankstown at Accor Stadium. Souths need at least one more win in their final three games (Warriors, Gold Coast, Sydney Roosters) to play finals for the first time since 2022. After a scoreless opening 22 minutes, Souths scored four tries in 24 minutes to lead 18-0. GAME BREAKER: After conceding 24 points in the second half against Parramatta, Souths’ defence was almost perfect against Canterbury: they only conceded one try and kept the Bulldogs scoreless for the first 60 minutes.

Canberra beat Cronulla-Sutherland at Ocean Protect Stadium, with the Sharks’ top-four hopes taking an unexpected blow. While Cronulla led 8-0 after six minutes, they also lost Braydon Trindall (dislocated shoulder) after he scored the Sharks’ first try. Canberra capitalised on this with three of the next four tries to lead 18-14 at half-time. Kaeo Weekes made a potentially game-changing error when he knocked on a Jed Stuart pass to give William Kennedy a try, putting Cronulla ahead 20-18 with 30 minutes left. Captain Joseph Tapine put Canberra back in front five minutes later. Ronaldo Mulitalo could have put the Sharks ahead again, but he was ruled to have grounded the ball short of the tryline. GAME BREAKER: Canberra’s defence in the last 30 minutes was excellent. At one point the Sharks had 15 tackles on Canberra’s line, but the Raiders kept them out.

Parramatta’s win over North Queensland (CommBank Stadium) kept the top eight race alive. While a Cowboys win would have all but sealed eighth spot, the door is slightly open for Canterbury and Canberra, with the Raiders and Cowboys still having a bye in hand. The Eels scored six tries to the Cowboys’ five, with two unusual try involvements from John Bateman (a cross-field kick for Tom Chester’s try) and Junior Paulo (passing 30 metres for Jordan Samrani’s try). Tallyn Da Silva scored a double for Parramatta (including a penalty try). GAME BREAKER: The Eels won the game off a contentious high tackle penalty in the 74th minute. Mitchell Moses was ankle tapped, fell to the ground, and was hit high by Tom Chester.

  • The Dolphins beat Manly Warringah at 4 Pines Park. Jamayne Isaako passed 1,000 points for the Dolphins with a try and three goals.
  • The Warriors beat Brisbane at Suncorp Stadium, though Luke Metcalf’s hamstring injury could cause some selection headaches for Andrew Webster.
  • Newcastle beat the Gold Coast at McDonald Jones Stadium, with doubles to Dane Gagai, Greg Marzhew, and Fletcher Sharpe.
  • St George Illawarra beat the Wests Tigers at CommBank Stadium. The Dragons led 18-6 at half-time.
