Reports have emerged that Matt Dufty has returned to Australia and signed with South Sydney’s NSW Cup side for the 2026 season, as the experienced fullback looks to resurrect his NRL career.

Dufty, now 30 years old, was released by Warrington Wolves by mutual consent last month, bringing an end to a four-season stint in the Super League. During his time in England, Dufty was a key attacking weapon for the Wolves, showcasing the pace, footwork and support play that once made him one of the most dangerous broken-field runners in the NRL.

The move back to Australia will see Dufty link up with South Sydney’s NSW Cup program, where he will aim to push his case for a return to the top grade. His last appearance in the NRL came in 2022 with the Canterbury Bulldogs, before he headed overseas in search of regular football.

Dufty originally made his name at the St George Illawarra Dragons, where he enjoyed his best NRL seasons and earned a reputation as an explosive attacking fullback capable of turning games in an instant. However, inconsistency and defensive question marks saw his NRL opportunities dry up, prompting his switch to Super League.

A strong season in NSW Cup could place Dufty back on the radar as early as 2026, particularly given South Sydney’s willingness in recent years to give experienced players a pathway back to first grade. While no NRL deal has been confirmed, the signing shapes as a low-risk, high-upside move for the Rabbitohs’ reserve-grade program.

For Dufty, the equation is simple: perform, stay healthy, and prove that he still belongs at the highest level of Australian rugby league.
