Match Preview
Two sides pinned to the bottom four and desperate to keep their seasons alive meet this Saturday at CommBank. For the Eels, they’re looking to finally turn effort into results after being unlucky to go down over the past two weeks. Meanwhile, the Raiders will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing shutout loss to the Roosters last week.
The home side, the Eels, have been admirable despite an ongoing injury toll. Over the past two weeks, they’ve fallen to stronger and fitter sides on paper, but only narrowly. Last week, they held firm against a relentless Bulldogs attack in what was their best defensive effort of the season, only to fall short via a penalty goal. The Raiders have had a similar campaign, struggling to find the consistency that was a cornerstone of their game last year, while also dealing with their own injury concerns.
The Eels’ line-up is unchanged from last week, with Harrison Edwards a chance to start at hooker after beginning there in the opening stages of last week’s match. For the Raiders, Sebastian Kris returns to the centres, shifting Daine Laurie to five-eighth. Jed Stuart comes onto the wing for Savelio Tamale, while Ata Mariota will start in place of Hudson Young.
This is a difficult contest to judge, with both sides missing key players due to injury or representative duty. They also share similarities in that both are fielding young and inexperienced players, which could lead to more errors than usual.
Jack Williams has been outstanding up front for the Eels and, as their current stand-in captain, will have his hands full against New Zealand representative Joseph Tapine this week. Kelma Tuilagi and Kitione Kautoga were explosive every time they carried the ball last week and, without Young in the second row, may find opportunities to wreak havoc.
Both sides boast plenty of talent in their back fives, which could defy the frosty winter conditions and produce some exciting football. Isaiah Iongi and Kaeo Weekes will provide a fascinating matchup between two young speedsters with huge futures ahead of them. The halves also share a similar lack of experience, with Ronald Volkman and Ethan Sanders both still within the first 50 games of their careers.
These sides have met 67 times, with the Raiders holding a slight edge with 36 wins. However, they’ve lost both times they’ve played at CommBank, including their most recent visit in the 2022 semi-final. Ultimately, this may come down to which side does the basics better — completing sets, holding possession, and maintaining discipline. Neither side has been consistent in these areas recently, and gifting possession to the opposition will almost certainly lead to points conceded.
It should be a tight contest, with the home crowd potentially helping the Eels finally convert effort into results.
