This week the North Queensland Cowboys farewelled seven players, headlined by retiring prop Jordan McLean and departing hooker Reece Robson.

Jordan McLean Retires After 242 NRL Games

Veteran front-rower Jordan McLean announced his retirement last week, drawing the curtain on a remarkable 242-game NRL career. McLean joined the Cowboys in 2018 after a successful stint with the Melbourne Storm, going on to feature in 156 matches for North Queensland – the 17th most in club history.

Robson Joins Roosters

Hooker Reece Robson will also exit the club, having signed with the Sydney Roosters for 2026 and beyond. Since arriving from St George Illawarra in 2020, Robson established himself as a mainstay of the Cowboys’ spine, amassing 131 appearances in six seasons.

Valemei Heads to Super League

Fijian outside back Semi Valemei is set for a new chapter in the UK Super League. Valemei played 17 games across three seasons in Townsville, scoring eight tries after joining mid-way through 2023.

Young Guns Move On

A number of younger Cowboys squad members will also depart.

  • Tom Duffy: The halfback debuted in Round 1 this season, finishing with six NRL appearances.
  • Jamal Shibasaki: Made his debut as an 18-year-old in 2024 in a memorable victory over the Roosters, playing two games across two seasons.
  • Emarly Bitungane: Created history in Round 22 this year against the Sharks, becoming just the third player of African heritage to play in the NRL. He featured again a week later against Parramatta.
  • Nic Lenaz: Registered a single NRL appearance in Round 23 against the Eels after joining the club on a Train and Replacement contract in the pre-season.

Club Statement

The Cowboys acknowledged the contributions of all seven departing players, from McLean’s veteran leadership to the milestones achieved by emerging talent. The club also wished each player success in the next stage of their careers.
