Corey Allan has officially announced his retirement from professional rugby league at just 27, calling time on a journey that took him through five NRL clubs and included a State of Origin debut.

Corey Allan Retirement Announcement

Allan confirmed the news on Instagram as the season drew to a close, reflecting on whether he wanted to continue his career overseas before deciding the moment was right.

“As the year is about to end, what better time to announce that I’ve decided to finish playing professionally,” Allan wrote.

He said the option to take up a contract abroad was tempting but ultimately didn’t feel right.

“The opportunity to head overseas was alluring but I didn’t want to do anything I wasn’t 100% in for, so I’m content with my decision.”

Allan added that he leaves the sport with no regrets.

“I’m so grateful to have been able to live out my dream… I have nothing but gratitude and happiness when I look back at what was.”

Early Journey Through the NRL

Born in Brisbane, Allan rose through the Broncos’ development system in 2017 before moving to South Sydney, where he made his NRL debut in 2019.

At the Rabbitohs, Allan quickly proved himself a versatile outside back, capable of playing wing, centre and fullback. He made 29 appearances over two seasons and featured in multiple finals campaigns.

Stints with Bulldogs, Roosters and Dragons

Allan joined the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs in 2021 during the club’s rebuilding phase. Over two seasons he played 21 games and scored three tries, becoming a regular member of the backline.

His next stop was the Sydney Roosters, where he appeared in 13 matches across 2022 and 2023, adding two more tries to his tally. The club released him at the end of 2023.

Allan then signed with St George Illawarra ahead of the 2024 season. His time at the Dragons initially stalled due to an ACL injury, limiting him to just a handful of games. However, he rebounded strongly in 2025, playing 12 matches and finishing with five tries — the most in any single season of his career.

Career Totals and Farewell Message

Across seven NRL seasons, Allan finished with:

  • 74 NRL appearances
  • 10 career tries
  • Four first-grade clubs (plus Broncos pathways)

In his farewell, Allan thanked every organisation that helped shape his career.

“Whether I came through your system or played for your club, the values and lessons I’ve received from all of you has shaped me into who I am today.”

State of Origin Highlight

Allan also achieved State of Origin honours, earning his first and only cap in Game III of the 2020 series. He played on the wing as Queensland produced a stunning 20–14 upset to clinch the title during one of the most chaotic and memorable Origin campaigns in history.

Lasting Impact

Corey Allan leaves the game earlier than many expected, but with widespread respect across the league. Coaches and teammates frequently praised his professionalism, adaptability and willingness to fill any role asked of him.

While his next steps are still unknown, the versatile back departs rugby league with a career that spanned multiple clubs, produced unforgettable memories and earned him a place in Queensland Origin history.
