Match Preview

The Sea Eagles bounced back in a big way last week, claiming their first win of the season, putting 52 points on the Dolphins to begin Kieran Foran’s reign as head coach with a bang. The Dragons, on the other hand, hit rock bottom as they were booed off their home ground in an embarrassing 32-0 loss at the hands of the Cowboys; they’re now the only team without a win this year.

Clint Gutherson is out with a hamstring injury, so Tyrell Sloan moves to fullback, with Setu Tu returning on the wing. Kyle Flanagan is also back from a concussion, with Daniel Atkinson shifting to five-eighth. Kade Reed and Loko Pasifiki Tonga are new faces on the bench.

For the Sea Eagles, there’s just one change as Jason Saab returns on the wing from suspension, with Clayton Faulalo shifting back to the bench.

It’s really now or never for the Dragons as pressure continues to mount on coach Shane Flanagan. It’s up to the likes of Damien Cook and Valentine Holmes – leaders with plenty of experience and success – to step up and lead this team out of the wilderness. Defence remains a concern but the Dragons also need points. They are averaging just 13.6 points per game, so it’s on the halves pairing of Flanagan and Atkinson to steer their team around the park and get some more points on the board.

For the Sea Eagles, they’ll be relying on their forwards to get them going again, and will be hoping for a repeat performance from Haumole Olakau’atu, who was at his devastating best against the Dolphins. Olakau’atu had 24 runs for an incredible 272 metres, including 127 post-contact and eight tackle breaks, while also contributing one try, two try assists, and two line breaks.

While the Sea Eagles will enter this clash as heavy favourites, the Dragons do hold a strong record over their opponents, winning nine of the past 10 games at WIN Stadium between the two sides.

Prediction

RLZ Tip: Sea Eagles by 10
Bold call: Olakau’atu adds another double.
