Round 5 of the 2026 NRL season delivered statement wins and defining performances, with the Penrith Panthers staying perfect and the Sea Eagles’ demolition of the Dolphins shaking up the ladder. With the competition beginning to take shape, the weekend offered a clearer picture of which sides are emerging as genuine contenders.

NRL Round 5 Ladder Snapshot

After five rounds, the Penrith Panthers remain the competition’s only unbeaten side (10 points, +150), while the Tigers, Knights and Rabbitohs round out the top four. The Bulldogs sit just outside the top eight, with early pressure beginning to build.

Biggest Talking Points from Round 5

Foran’s Sea Eagles Post 50 On The Dolphins

The Sea Eagles responded to the sacking of head coach Anthony Seibold by producing their best 80‑minute performance of the season, thrashing the Dolphins 52–18 at Kayo Stadium. Their big players stood up — Haumole Olakau’atu was outstanding on the edge, while Jake Trbojevic delivered his best game of the year to date.

It looked as though the Dolphins would record their first scoreless performance until Hamiso Tabuai‑Fidow crossed for the first of his two tries with ten minutes remaining.

GAME BREAKER: The match got away from the Dolphins during a decisive ten‑minute period in which Tom Trbojevic crossed and Lehi Hopoate scored a double. This coincided with Morgan Knowles being sent to the sin bin for a professional foul.

Knights Impressive Start Continues With Solid Raiders Victory

Newcastle continued their excellent start to 2026 with a victory over the Raiders, securing their first home win in eight attempts. They executed a well‑managed game plan that frustrated Canberra’s attack throughout the contest.

Canberra’s afternoon worsened after half‑time while trailing 10–6, when Savelio Tamale was sin‑binned for contact in a contest with Dom Young. Newcastle capitalised immediately, skipping away to a 20–6 lead. Justin Holbrook has his side purring despite the absence of key players Dylan Brown and Kalyn Ponga.

GAME BREAKER: Tamale’s two errors after the break – a knock‑on in a contest with Young, followed shortly by the sin bin – extinguished the Raiders’ hopes of victory.

Wests Tigers Move to Second After Golden‑Point Win

Jock Madden’s golden‑point penalty goal saw the Wests Tigers move into second place after five rounds. The contest turned on its head when the Tigers led 18–10 before Luke Laulilii was sent to the sin bin for a mid‑air tackle on Bailey Simonsson, which resulted in the Eels winger leaving the field with a suspected dislocated ankle.

Debutant Apa Twidle scored immediately, then added a second try three minutes later to level the scores. Penalty goals were exchanged late before the match went into extra time. Dylan Walker was penalised for offside while attempting to charge down Madden’s field‑goal attempt, handing the Tigers victory. Eels captain Mitchell Moses also had a running battle with referee Peter Gough throughout the contest.

GAME BREAKER: Jack Williams’ knock‑on from Adam Doueihi’s kick in golden point. The ensuing offside penalty in the new set handed the Tigers the win.

Match Reviews & Results

Below is a full breakdown of all matches from NRL Round 5, including key stats and game‑deciding moments.

Dolphins vs Sea Eagles

Full Time: Dolphins 18 – 52 Sea Eagles
Dolphins 18 (Tries: Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow 70′, 72′; Herbie Farnworth 74′. Goals: Jamayne Isaako 70′, 74′, 75′)
Sea Eagles 52 (Tries: Tom Trbojevic 14′; Lehi Hopoate 17′, 25′; Reuben Garrick 33′; Luke Brooks 36′; Haumole Olakau’atu 58′; Tolutau Koula 62′; Ben Trbojevic 65′; Corey Waddell 67′. Goals: Jamal Fogarty 15′, 26′, 34′, 38′, 59′, 66′, 69′. Penalty Goals: Jamal Fogarty 52′)
Half-Time Score: Dolphins 0 – 28 Sea Eagles
Date: Round 5, 2026
Venue: Kayo Stadium, Redcliffe

Quick Take: The Dolphins’ error‑riddled and ill‑disciplined performance is a concern for Kristian Woolf. They look nowhere near the side that threatened to make last year’s finals. A massive improvement will be required, with Penrith awaiting them after the bye.

Rabbitohs vs Bulldogs

Full Time: Rabbitohs 32 – 24 Bulldogs
Rabbitohs 32 (Tries: Alex Johnston 4′; Latrell Mitchell 22′, 65′; Tallis Duncan 46′; Cameron Murray 56′. Goals: Latrell Mitchell 6′, 47′, 57′, 67′. Penalty Goals: Latrell Mitchell 27′, 70′)

Half-Time Score: Rabbitohs 12 – 18 Bulldogs
Date: Round 5, 2026
Venue: Accor Stadium, Sydney

Quick Take: There has been criticism of Cameron Ciraldo’s decision to opt for Sean O’Sullivan to replace the injured Stephen Crichton, with Matt Burton shifting to the centres. Crichton’s exit changed the momentum of the contest as South Sydney surged into the lead and never looked back.

Panthers vs Storm

Full Time: Panthers 50 – 10 Storm
Panthers 50 (Tries: Liam Martin 4′; Freddy Lussick 10′; Thomas Jenkins 21′, 76′; Nathan Cleary 24′; Casey McLean 39′; Brian To’o 42′; Luke Garner 58′; Dylan Edwards 71′. Goals: Nathan Cleary 6′, 26′, 39′, 44′, 60′, 72′; Paul Alamoti 77′)
Storm 10 (Tries: Manaia Waitere 14′; Sualauvi Faalogo 66′. Goals: Nick Meaney 15′)
Half-Time Score: Panthers 26 – 6 Storm
Date: Round 5, 2026
Venue: CommBank Stadium, Sydney

Quick Take: Penrith are being labelled “unbeatable” by experts, with Casey McLean emerging as a potential Origin contender should Stephen Crichton be unavailable due to a shoulder injury. The Panthers have now outscored their 2025 Grand Final opponents 76–10 across the opening rounds. Melbourne, meanwhile, are staring down the barrel of four straight losses – something they last endured in 2022.

Dragons vs Cowboys

Full Time: Dragons 0 – 32 Cowboys
Dragons 0 (No tries)
Cowboys 32 (Tries: Scott Drinkwater 11′; Jaxon Purdue 29′, 38′; Braidon Burns 50′; Murray Taulagi 61′; Jake Clifford 78′. Goals: Jake Clifford 30′, 39′, 52′, 78′)
Half-Time Score: Dragons 0 – 16 Cowboys
Date: Round 5, 2026
Venue: St George Venues Jubilee Stadium, Kogarah, NSW

Quick Take: The chorus of boos at half‑time and full‑time at Jubilee Stadium said it all – Shane Flanagan’s job appears to be under serious pressure. The Dragons’ season was summed up by an inept ten‑minute stretch in which Reuben Cotter was sin‑binned, yet the Cowboys still extended their lead through a try to Braidon Burns.

Sharks vs Warriors

Full Time: Sharks 36 – 22 Warriors
Sharks 36 (Tries: William Kennedy 13′, 17′; KL Iro 24′; Billy Burns 33′; Teig Wilton 50′; Siosifa Talakai 63′. Goals: Nicholas Hynes 15′, 18′, 25′, 35′, 51′, 65′)
Warriors 22 (Tries: Dallin Watene-Zelezniak 5′, 27′, 42′; Erin Clark 76′. Goals: Tanah Boyd 43′, 76′. Penalty Goals: Tanah Boyd 8′)

Half-Time Score: Sharks 24 – 10 Warriors
Date: Sunday 5th April 2026
Venue: Ocean Protect Stadium, Sydney

Quick Take: Cronulla dominated early, with possession heavily favouring the visitors. Key plays from KL Iro, the dominance of Nicho Hynes, and a double to Will Kennedy saw the Sharks lead 24–10 at the break. The Warriors’ only joy came through a hat‑trick to Dallin Watene‑Zelezniak — the first time they have lost a match in which he scored three or more tries.

Knights vs Raiders

Full Time: Knights 32 – 12 Raiders
Knights 32 (Tries: Greg Marzhew 28′, 68′; Fletcher Sharpe 32′; Dominic Young 43′, 76′; Phoenix Crossland 47′. Goals: Sandon Smith 34′, 49′, 70′, 77′)

Half-Time Score: Knights 10 – 6 Raiders
Date: Sunday 5th April 2026
Venue: McDonald Jones Stadium, Newcastle

Quick Take: Newcastle continue to defy the odds despite missing Kalyn Ponga and Dylan Brown through injury. They shut down Canberra’s attacking threats and capitalised on Tamale’s sin‑bin period to score twice. The Raiders are clearly missing the direction Jamal Fogarty provided in recent seasons.
