Sydney clubs must be put on notice
If the National Rugby League is to become truly national, Sydney clubs need to be in the firing line.
Over the summer break there’s been widely-reported problems with Cronulla’s finances. For some time now Manly have struggled, demonstrated by Trent Barrett needing to bring outdoor furniture from home to use at their training facilities. Before Phil Gould’s move out west, Penrith were on the cusp of financial disaster.
Its positive that the National Rugby League won’t bail out clubs, forcing them to the brink.
A better solution would be to propose a short-term two-or-three year plan where there’s strict criteria in order to be a stand alone Sydney club. If you don’t meet the criteria, you lose the right to have a National Rugby League licence.
