MATCHDAY PREVIEW
Wakefield host Wigan for the first competitive fixture since their relegation to the Championship in 2023. They hosted the Champions last year in a pre-season friendly to celebrate Matty Ashurst’s career with his testimonial. That game ended early as the lights went off multiple times and put the players at risk so let’s hope the same thing doesn’t happen again.
Wigan will be hoping that the pitch isn’t against them like it was at Dewsbury as the Cherry and Whites grasped victory from the jaws of defeat, with Jack Farrimond scoring two late tries to carry on the chase to catch Hull KR at the top of the table.
Wakefield fought back against Leigh Leopards but just fell short for the second round in a row. Wakefield boss Daryl Powell has named an unchanged 21 for the clash, but there’s no guarantee he’ll name the same 17, particularly given the way his side lost to Leigh Leopards on Sunday. As such, Cam Scott, Seth Nikotemo, Jayden Myers and Lachlan Walmsley will all be pushing to return to the fold this week with Powell having plenty to think about.
Wigan has a big advantage with Bevan French and Luke Thompson potentially coming back into the 17-man squad after a few games out. French missed last week due to a calf complaint and was an unused sub against Salford Red Devils the round before, while Luke Thompson has missed Wigan’s last two with a rib injury.
There could be a few milestones passed in this fixture as Liam Marshall needs two tries to hit 150 Super League tries. This comes after the winger passed Pat Richards as Wigan’s Super League top try scorer. Adam Keighran is also two points away from 500 points in the Super League. French is also one try away from the big 100 in Super League. He has scored in the past three games against the Trinity.
Wigan will want to have a big performance after last week, but Wakefield has always been a place that the Warriors have struggled in the past. Wigan will edge to victory, but it will not be easy.
