MATCHDAY PREVIEW

The Sydney Roosters welcome the Gold Coast Titans to Allianz Stadium for the first time since the new stadium opened.

The Roosters followed their stunning upset of Penrith up with a disappointing 14-6 loss to the Warriors in Auckland last Friday, while the Titans bounced back from their defeat to Canterbury with a comprehensive 26-6 victory over Newcastle to enter the top eight.

Trent Robinson has been forced into a change following the Warriors loss, with Connor Watson unavailable due to a failed HIA. Zach Dockar-Clay will start for just the second time in his career (the first was also against Gold Coast in 2024). In some good news for the Roosters, Nat Butcher and Lindsay Collins have both been named to return via the bench.

The Titans have been struck a blow of their own, with fullback Keano Kini out with a neck injury. In his place comes Jaylan De Groot, making his second first grade appearance after debuting in 2025. The remainder of the 17 is unchanged from the victory over Newcastle last weekend.

Last time the Roosters appeared at Allianz Stadium, they conceded 50 in their season opener against the Broncos. Since then, their form has improved rapidly, putting in a stunning performance to beat the Panthers and going down to the Warriors despite an improved defensive effort, making 448 tackles and missing just 33. Had their handling been better in Auckland, they would have been a strong chance at winning. Back on home deck, they will be confident that they can repeat the performance of a fortnight ago and claim their second win of the season.

When the Titans found themselves down 22-0 after less than 20 minutes in their first match against the Bulldogs, it looked like they could be in for another long season. Although they ultimately went down 40-24, there were plenty of positive signs that led to their clinical 26-6 defeat of the Knights in round 3. Although Kini is a big loss, they still have an exciting young spine that includes AJ Brimson, Jayden Campbell, and Roosters 2019 premiership winner Sam Verrills. Their forward pack also put on a strong performance against the Knights, led by captain Tino Fa’asuamaleaui, who hasn’t missed a bit since returning from his ACL injury.

This has been a tremendously one-sided match-up, with the Roosters winning 17 of their 25 meetings since the Titans entered the competition in 2007. The Roosters have also won 11 in a row by an average margin of 16 points, with the Titans’ last win coming in May 2016. The Titans managed to win four of their seven meetings at the old Sydney Football Stadium, however they haven’t beaten the Roosters away from the Gold Coast since 2013.

MATCHDAY PREDICTION

Roosters by 6 points.
