MATCHDAY PREVIEW
After three big weeks of travel, Cronulla will be grateful to return home. But their trips to Las Vegas and Townsville were productive: they were competitive in the Vegas loss to Penrith (trailing 12-10 at half-time and losing 28-22) and – after a weekend off – beat North Queensland 36-12 at Queensland Country Bank Stadium (doubles to Kayal Iro and Samuel Stonestreet).
Tyrone Munro scored a double as Souths snuck past the Dolphins 16-14; and they came from 24-12 down to beat St George Illawarra 25-24, with Jamie Humphreys kicking four goals from four as well as the match-winning field goal. Wayne Bennett’s influence is showing, as Souths have gritted out two wins in games they could have easily lost, but Cronulla is the Rabbitohs’ first major test for 2025.
The Sharks won both matches last season: 34-22 (round 6) and 20-6 (round 22), and lead Souths 22 wins to 18 since 1998.
Cronulla coach Craig Fitzgibbon has stuck with the same 17 from Townsville, while Jack Wighton returns to the centres for Souths with Fletcher Myers back out on the wing.
The crucial head-to-head clash is in the halves: Nicho Hynes vs Jamie Humphreys. Rightly or wrongly, Hynes cops the brunt of the criticism in the media and he needs to perform consistently if Cronulla are to fulfill their potential as one of the premiership front-runners. After moving from Manly Warringah, Humphreys has shown he can be a match winner just two games into his Souths career: he’s kicked six goals so far and slotted the game-winning field goal against the Dragons; Hynes kicked four goals against the Cowboys.
While Souths have won both games, and Cronulla have only won one so far, the Sharks have looked more impressive and should do it comfortably back at home.
