MATCHDAY PREVIEW

Super Saturday for Round 17 kicks off in Brisbane, as the Broncos host the Warriors at Suncorp Stadium. The Broncos are coming off a 34-28 comeback win over the Sharks, while the Warriors went down to the Panthers 28-18 in New Zealand.

For the Broncos, Michael Maguire has named the same 17 that was victorious against the Sharks. Selwyn Cobbo is named in the reserves and is a chance to feature somewhere in the side on gameday.

The Broncos will take a huge amount of confidence out of the final 30 minutes of their game against the Sharks. Down 28-12 and looking destined for a loss, they rallied to score four unanswered tries and give Michael Maguire a reason to smile again. Payne Haas was immense. Backing up from Origin while playing through a minor quad issue, he led from the front with 21 runs, 40 tackles, nine tackle breaks and six offloads in 58 minutes. If Haas continues producing those efforts, the Broncos will be hard to beat. New left winger Josiah Karapani is also in hot try scoring form at Suncorp Stadium, with four tries in his past two games. He’ll be up against Ed Kosi this week – a matchup the Broncos will look to exploit.

For the Warriors, Dallin Watene-Zelezniak is out with an ankle injury and is replaced on the wing by Ed Kosi. Rocco Berry returns from a hamstring injury at centre, with Moala Graham-Taufa dropping out of the squad. Kurt Capewell returns in the second row after being rested last week, with Leka Halasima moving to the bench and Tanner Stowers-Smith dropping to 18th man.

A disappointing result for the Warriors at home last week will give them plenty of motivation to go to Brisbane and turn things around. Despite the loss, they remain in 4th position, with a six-point buffer between themselves and the Broncos in 5th. The return of Kurt Capewell and Rocco Berry should add some solidarity to the edge defence, which was breached several times by the Panthers last week. While the Warriors have won three of their past four games at Suncorp Stadium, none of those wins have come against the Broncos. Their last win against the Broncos at Suncorp was back in 2018.
