MATCHDAY PREVIEW
Normality returns to the NRL this week following a stellar weekend of football up in Brisbane; fans will be treated to a cracking top eight affair in the Victorian capital when the Melbourne Storm go head-to-head with the Wests Tigers. The Storm sit on the edge of the top four and will need to keep notching wins if they want to keep their two-point advantage over the five sides nipping at their heels, one of which being their opponents this weekend.
The Storm come into this on the back of a Golden Point defeat to the high-flying Raiders and master coach Craig Bellamy will be looking for a big bounce back against the Tigers. His side was far from bad against the Raiders, and it was just a few brain snaps that saw the Raiders come over the top of them and walk out of Suncorp with the win, and Bellamy will not allow his side to slip like that again, especially in front of their home crowd.
The Tigers have had a renewed level of fight this season and it was on full show in Magic Round against the Dragons as they withstood a powerful second half performance to walk away 34-28 victors. The Tigers of old would have likely succumbed to the pressure applied by this Dragons outfit; but this new side, spearheaded by a trio of players hoping to receive a phone call from Blues coach Laurie Daley in Terrell May, Jarome Luai, and Apisai Koroisau, has seen a culture shift of determination and resilience that has been long overdue for the struggling club.
There are great match-ups across the park, but it’s the battle of the two halves with their respective Origin jerseys under threat that shapes as the most intriguing: Munster vs Luai. Luai was part of a successful series last year but with calls getting louder and louder for a Moses-Cleary combo, it’s up to Luai to show that he deserves another crack with a strong performance. Munster, on the other hand, missed the series last year due to injury but his fill-in Tom Dearden showed his class both in Origin and at the international level and has put himself firmly in the conversation for a recall for this upcoming series. Both players need a big performance to shore up their respective cases for an Origin berth.
The Melbourne Storm have had the better of their recent engagements with the Tigers, winning eight of their last 10 as well as four of their last five at home. While in team list news, both sides are unchanged from their Magic Round line-ups and the Storm have the presence of Nelson Asofa-Solomona looming on the extended bench if Bellamy is looking to add a bit more punch to his middle forward rotation.
