MATCHDAY PREVIEW
An interesting Friday night clash awaits between two sides whose head coach was the last one to win a premiership for the other team, and more recently a game between two of the most disappointing teams from Magic Round last weekend.
Big team news is Latrell Mitchell’s return from suspension (with Jye Gray returning to the bench), and the Rabbitohs need that spark as they have scored just 20 points in their last three matches. Jamie Humphreys’ return is also key as the Rabbitohs have been chopping and changing halves since Humphreys and Cody Walker have been out. Talking of chopping, Humphreys’ return sees Lewis Dodd out of the side, and it’s hard to see him convincing Wayne Bennett for a while. There has been some shifting around in the pack too for the Rabbitohs, with the headline being hooker Peter Mamouzelos out with an elbow injury, which sees Siliva Havili start at hooker, with an all-new prop line up with Jai Arrow and Keaon Koloamatangi moving from the back row. One of last weekend’s props Sean Keppie has dropped to the bench, and last week’s captain Tevita Tatola is out of the 17. It’s a tough ask up against arguably the best starting prop combination in the NRL in Payne Haas and Patrick Carrigan. Euan Aitken at least returns to where he plays best in the second row.
After the Broncos’ underwhelming attacking effort against Penrith last weekend, you could imagine Michael Maguire might have been keen to bring Ezra Mam back into the side at his first weekend of availability, but the headache of how to fit in all their halves and hookers will wait for another time. Given the Rabbitohs’ constant changing of their halves, the consistency of the Broncos’ halves is a major advantage. If they play at the same standard as they did against the Bulldogs in round 8, and not Magic Round standard. One small change in the forwards sees Fletcher Baker replace Jaiyden Hunt on the bench. This means Xavier Willison continues in his new second row role, which has been quite the success for the Broncos and the man mountain himself. Combining his efforts with the dynamic duo of Haas and Carrigan will give the Rabbitohs plenty to worry about, given South Sydney shipped 30 points against Newcastle, a team who had only scored at 10.3 points per game before that.
An interesting side note to the game are the coaches, who have had great success with their opponent for this weekend, although there’s been a few years since the respective premierships, they are the last for each club.
The winner depends more on how the Broncos play than South Sydney to a degree. If the Broncos are on song, they are hard to beat as the previously unbeaten Bulldogs found out in round 8. If the Broncos are off-colour for another week, then South Sydney might be able to grind their way to a win like they were doing earlier in the season. With a little Latrell magic to get them over the line. The Rabbitohs need it, they’ve lost four in a row.
Onto the stats, and Friday night should provide some relief for Brisbane, as they have a surprisingly good record away on a Friday – winning eight of their last nine since 2023. Coincidentally the only loss in that run was against Souths. Night games are good for the NRL’s Dracula team, as the Broncos have lost six days games in a row. Souths aren’t without a chance according to stats. They have won four of their last five home games on a Friday, and four from five against the Broncos at the Sydney Olympic Stadium.
MATCHDAY PREDICTION
