Match Preview

The 2025 Rugby League Ashes series concludes this weekend at AMT Headingley Stadium, Leeds, with Australia chasing a clean sweep after victories in the opening two Tests — 26–6 at Wembley and 14–4 at Liverpool.

Kangaroos Eye Back-to-Back Ashes Whitewashes

The Kangaroos have dominated the series in patches without ever truly finding their rhythm, but they remain on the verge of securing back-to-back Ashes clean sweeps — 22 years apart.

Isaah Yeo returns to captain the side after missing the second Test due to HIA protocols, replacing Lindsay Smith. While Australia have won both Tests comfortably, criticism back home has focused on Kevin Walters’ reluctance to make changes, with pundits calling for more attacking fluency after two somewhat underwhelming displays.

Still, the Kangaroos’ defensive structures have been near-impenetrable — conceding just one try in two matches — and with Reece Walsh again expected to be influential from fullback, they will enter the series finale as firm favourites.

England Searching for Points

For Shaun Wane’s England, the challenge is clear: find a way to score. After failing to convert several opportunities in Liverpool, England’s attack has been their downfall. The inclusion of Joe Burgess, replacing injured Dom Young, could provide the spark they need on the edges. Meanwhile, Harry Newman has been called into the squad and is in line for his first appearance of the series.

Wane’s men were more competitive in the second Test, matching Australia for long periods, but will need to capitalise on key moments to avoid a 3–0 series defeat.

Referee Grant Atkins will again control proceedings after officiating the Liverpool Test with the hopes of a more open, free-flowing contest that should suit the Kangaroos.
