Melbourne (2 points, +48), Cronulla-Sutherland (2 points, +40), Penrith (2 points, +26), and the NZ Warriors (2 points, +24) finished round 1 in the top four; followed by South Sydney (2 points, +10), Newcastle (2 points, +10), Canberra (2 points, +1), and Canterbury-Bankstown (2 points, +1).

There were plenty of points in the opening round: including last weekend’s Vegas games, the average winning margin was 20 points. Melbourne and Cronulla both scored 50 points, Souths scored 40, and defending premiers Brisbane were kept scoreless. There were also Golden Point wins for Canterbury and Canberra. And, with one try against The Dolphins, Souths’ Alex Johnston is only two away from passing Ken Irvine. Can he do it against the Sydney Roosters at Allianz Stadium on Friday?

Melbourne sent a message with a big win over Parramatta at AAMI Park. The first 2026 game in Australia started controversially, when J’maine Hopgood was sin binned for high contact on Alec MacDonald, with the Storm lock not returning. While Melbourne had lost a number of key players of the off-season, it seemed like business as usual as they scored 10 tries (doubles to Harry Grant and Sualauvi Faalogo). The result was a reality check for Parramatta after they had a promising finish to 2025 and won the 2026 Pre-season Challenge. GAME BREAKER: Parramatta led 4-0 in the opening minutes despite Hopgood’s absence, then two tries in four minutes (Will Warbrick and Grant) gave Melbourne a 12-4 after 16 minutes. Grant’s try came from a 30 metre dummy-half dash with nobody laying a hand on him.

Penrith made a big statement by shutting out Brisbane at Suncorp Stadium. While the Panthers led 18-0 at half-time, there was no repeat of Brisbane’s preliminary final heroics as they squandered their scoring chances. With the Broncos down 20-0, Kotoni Staggs tried to score himself even though Deine Mariner was unmarked in the right corner. A try from either Staggs or Mariner would have given Brisbane a small opening with 20 minutes left. Thomas Jenkins’ second try (intercepting a Reece Walsh pass) put the game away for good. It was the first time since 2024 (when Penrith lost to Melbourne 8-0) that the defending premiers had been held scoreless in round 1. GAME BREAKER: Two tries in the first 20 minutes (Casey McLean and Dylan Edwards) gave Penrith a 10-0 lead and helped assert their dominance infront of a packed out Suncorp Stadium.

Canberra beat Manly Warringah at 4 Pines Park – in a game that had similarities to the Raiders’ qualifying final loss to Brisbane. The Raiders looked comfortable at 28-14, but two tries in two minutes (Tolutau Koula and Jamal Fogarty) and a Fogarty penalty goal on full-time took the game to Golden Point. Unlike the Brisbane game, the Raiders found someone to deliver: Ethan Sanders. He showed his composure with the match-winning field goal, along with a try and four goals. Manly had possession for the opening 10 minutes and led 14-0 after 18 minutes, while Noah Martin’s first try (of two) on debut kept Canberra in the game at half-time. GAME BREAKER: After squandering a try late in the first half, Xavier Savage made up for it with two tries in four minutes to put Canberra up 22-14. He nearly had a third but was taken out as he tried to score in the corner.

  • Jesse Ramien, Braydon Trindall, and Nicholas Hynes all scored doubles as Cronulla put 50 points on the Gold Coast at Ocean Protect Stadium.
  • The Warriors scored seven tries against the Sydney Roosters at Go Media Stadium, with a double to Chanel Harris-Tavita.
  • South Sydney beat The Dolphins at Suncorp Stadium. Campbell Graham scored a double and Latrell Mitchell scored 20 points (two tries and six goals).
